what made him great apart from his empire and the giant wars he won. was, that even at his level in society at the time he publically accepted his mistake of the Kalinga war and ruled his empire entirely differently. that is to me what makes him great. at his level in society at that time, accepting his mistake, and changing for the better. it is rare for people to do that, even in today's time. especially people in the public eye such as political leaders. people would rather continue arguing and fighting, knowing they're making themselves look lowly. then ask for forgiveness for their mistake and look at their faults and change.

Funfact -

After islamic invasion in our subcontinent, Buddhism was eradicated and once the bodh gaya tree was also uprooted where Buddha got salvation.

But During Ashoka's reign instead of making his son king, he sent him with his daughter to Srilanka for spreading Buddhism along with a sapling of the bodh gaya tree....

Thus Buddhism survived in form of Sinhalese of Srilanka. Later a sapling from Sri Lanka of that tree was brought back and planted at the uprooted orignal location.
