I use a calculator and add my groceries up as I shop to make sure I stay in budget. Keeps me more accountable when I want to impulse buy 😊

Milk expires?? I have three teen boys. A gallon of milk only lasts about 18 hours at my house.

Eat before you go grocery shopping. You will buy more, if you are hungry.

My grandparents worked seasonally in a tomato canning factory back in the 60s. When my dad was little he would go to work with them during the summers. He remembers the blank cans coming down the belt and they would get Hunts labels stuck on. When that roll of labels ran out the belt would stop and a guy would come put a new roll of labels on, this time Del Monte, next time store brand. Same tomatoes, same cans, different label. Every time dad taught a financial class (adjunct professor at the community college) he would tell that story to his students. When you were talking about the cheese being the same, just different packages, it reminded me of my dad :)

I have done all these things for years. Also, sometimes the name brand item is cheaper than the store brand. I always buy the cheapest. My store does a ten for ten with the 11th free. That's when I stock up.
I shop the sale and base my list on that. I also use my loyalty card and coupons. But the best thing I have ever done is to open my calculator app and add as I go. It keeps me from spending to much on items I don't need.
I'm happy to say, my family is debt free and we just paid off our mortgage. Living frugally has its benefits. 😁

My Nan has a saying: stock is as good as money. Buying cans and frozen, things that will last, when they're reduced or on sale, and having a stocked pantry and freezer, will serve you when your funds are lower. Stockpile when you can and it'll serve you when you can't. Having the stock is as good as having the money.

These are great tips but when buying foods like cheese and canned soup it’s important to check the nutrition label, I will pay more for something that doesn’t have crappy ingredients like high fructose and artificial ingredients. Also sodium and trans fat need to be looked out for.

Watch the price per ounce labels because they’re not always correct. I’ve caught Walmart’s labels showing soda cans per ounce for the 24 packs vs price per can on the 12 packs. It makes it look cheaper to buy the 24 pack when it’s really not. It never hurts to pull out your phone’s calculator from time to time and check the math.

I always shred my own cheese, and I buy whole loaves of Italian bread to make garlic bread instead of buying presliced garlic bread.

One thing to keep in mind is that if you will use a gallon of milk or something well before the expiration date, to go ahead and buy the one that expires sooner. If everyone goes in and buys the furthest item back, many items will go bad and have to be thrown out, causing prices to go up and also being wasteful. Just something to keep in mind.

A friend of mine has learned the exact time of day when the supermarket reduces prices on a Friday evening and does her big shop then. She will make do with whatever she finds for her family. I cannot believe the deals she gets.

I have been binge watching your videos while nursing my youngest son and I just have to say YES! Listening to you feels like talking to a friend who gets it 😅 I was raised by my grandmother who was on a small fixed income and she taught me early to live frugally. Now I have a family of 5, I am a stay at home mom, my husband is self employed (so we can have great months AND horrible months), but we have very small debt. It’s such a good feeling to know that by giving it just a little more thought and effort I am giving my family opportunities to do things we definitely couldn’t do otherwise. 💕

Those are all great tips that I use too. Today I got all my meat marked half off! Sell by tomorrow, went straight into the freezer. I made ribs on memorial day and have enough left over to make a different meal. I'm pulling pork right now to make 🌮 and 🌯! I was able to apply $100 to debt yesterday just by using your weekly budget plan last month!!! Super excited!!!

Love, Love Love this video!!! My 2 tips: co-op lunches and splitting groceries with other families/friends. So for the co-op lunches, I worked out providing salad and chobani yogurt for myself and co-worker (bought everything at Costco) and my co-worker would supply the protein and dinner. His wife would often make a double batch which worked out as lunch for him and me and sometimes dinner if they had a lot leftover. Also, at the time, my cousin & I were both single so we’d go to Costco together and buy perishable and non-perishable items together and split the cost. Even though we were buying in bulk, we were able to save on cost.

In Australia the generic rule doesn’t always apply to cans and jars. A lot of the time the brand-named jars and cans are more expensive because they’re produced by Australian growers and factories whilst the cheaper ones come from China where the farming laws are a lot looser and the factories don’t offer their workers fair conditions. Another consideration is that the supermarket owned brands like Select don’t have to buy shelf space, so they’re cheaper, but this edges out independently owned brands that give people jobs and offer farmers more options. All I’m saying is that sometimes paying 70c extra on crushed tomatoes is better than making a donation to a local charity.

Its old school but I find just writing a physical shopping list helps me because I know when I'm picking up something I don't actually need. Helps me to decide whether or not to treat myself.

I just came back from Wal-Mart, here in California Wal-Mart fresh food is so more expensive! I buy at Mexican grocery stores or aldi and is much cheaper! Wal-Mart is just for cleaning stuff, snacks, and supplies
