Samsung Galaxy S5 Review: After 2 Months!

This my review of the predecessor to the S6, the Samsung Galaxy S5 after 2 months!

As always, special thanks to AT&T for sending the phone out to review!

It's been over 2 months since the initial release of the Galaxy S5 and it still holds up as a pretty good flagship phone. It features a 5.1" 1080p display, Android KitKat w/TouchWiz, 16MP camera, and IP67 water resistance.

After reviewing the video, I realized that this review seemed a little unfair or biased. The S5 is a great phone, I just wanted to emphasize that it doesn't stand out that much from its competitors and predecessors. On the contrary, there are plenty of things I love about the phone. The screen is amazing, the waterproofing is great, and the battery life is spectacular.

I didn't find this to be a very balanced review. I think that the worst thing that can be said about the S5 is that it doesn't necessarily stand out the way the S2 stood out among its peers. But the S2 in fairness was the first phone to really have every practical piece of technology available on a phone at the time. Up until then, phones might have had 80% of the features, but one phone wouldn't have a front facing camera, one wouldn't have bluetooth, etc. That problem doesn't really exist anymore because every flagship phone has pretty much all the goodies.

I would say the IP67 rating is a monumental feature. It is nice not to have to worry about being caught in the rain, or in a dusty place, or dropping the device in the toilet. It's a little extra ruggedness for a little peace of mind. Next is the beautiful vibrant Super AMOLED display. It's stunning, and as a personal preference I prefer it to any LCD display. The fingerprint sensor is not quite as awkward as he makes it out to be, but it's not perfect, and it is about 80% effective, I actually use it more than I thought I would. I disagreed with him about the security flaw though, I also feel that it is more secure at least in that no one can figure out your password/pattern by watching you open your phone. Another huge plus for the phone is that I have never gotten less than 12 hours out of the battery, and I've gotten up to 24 with charge to go. I have all the radios and features on. Even if the battery died though, it charges up lightning fast. 0 - 100 in less than 2 hours. My galaxy S2 used to get between 4 and 10 hours depending on GPS usage. Of course I love the camera, the low light performance isn't as bad as he makes it sound, it's actually better than my Nikon point and shoot, and I love the 4K video, and all the recording modes.

Other things I like about this phone are things that are true of any galaxy phone; light weight, rugged construction (plastic tends to wear better than metal or glass), removable battery, etc.

The biggest thing I would complain about on this phone is that there again seems to be no protection for the camera lens, or it hasn't been made easily replaceable. It may or may not be gorilla glass, I can't tell, but so far it hasn't scratched. That vulnerability is high priority in my eyes though. The second thing is much smaller, the chromed plastic bezel is my S2 was the first thing to deteriorate and it doesn't appear that they have improved it any.

All in all, I think people need to stop expecting something revolutionary every year. All smartphones are great nowadays, and it all about the little tweaks. There is no need to buy a new phone every year. Wait a couple generations, and I'm sure you'll be satisfied with your next phone. I love my Galaxy S2, but I skipped the S3 and S4 and got the S5 and I'm very happy because it's a huge improvement over the S2!

I just don't understand why people be hating on the galaxy s5. It's a great phone. The screen is gorgeous and android is so customizable that the skins don't matter. I happen to like the Samsung skin but whatever part I get bored with I change it. This phone is grade A.

Thank for the review, I'm thinking of dumping my iPhone 5 and I don't know why but Samsung seems like the only android I am considering, good battery, water proof and I'm not even used to android so I don't care if there isn't much upgrade from s4.

Excellent job good sir. This review makes me want to hone in on the LG GE a bit more, I've seen quite a few outstanding reviews for that phone and quite a few lukewarm ones for the Samsung.

Awesome review and loved the little bit of humor in the video. Totally agree with everything you said in this video. The Galaxy S5 it's eh; it just works. There are SO many other gorgeous Android smartphones, like the HTC One M8 and the Nexus 5. Loving the content, just subscribed.
