These were also centres for prostitution which made the church cautious.

I heard the Mongols were worse. They never bathed and took pride in it. Body odor and skin rashes were rampant.

Damn medieval times must have been smelly

They probably went down to the river or local creek to wash up every week or so

Next question: How often did they clean the baths at all?

in the middle east im pretty sure bath houses just kept getting more popular until about 1800, but they were very different from European ones

Can’t believe that ModernWarrior tried convincing people by saying that native Americans were the ones that taught Europeans to wash/bathe themselves 😂

Now I’m curious how often people bathed in the Yuan Dynasty and the Malian Empire.

They literally did social distancing centuries before us. 💀💀💀

So in other words the notion that people bathed like once a year only really happened after the plaque, and I assume that wasn’t for a very long period.

Damn they still milk this "people in medieval times didn't bath" bs. Hygiene is a fundamental instinct of mammals, to actually believe people didn't wash themselfs for months is obnoxious.

That's why you should live in a very small village next to a river

Private bathing was common among all classes, although luxury is a different matter. Bathhouses were seen as centres of immorality due to both public nudity and their commonly being places of things like prostitution. They had begun to nevertheless grow in popularity during the later Medieval period of the West, and they continued as such into the Renaissance period.
The sixteenth century was centuries after the Black Death.

They also wiped their smelly bits probably daily (as a morning routine)... cuz they, y'know, had noses.

They didn't just wash the visible parts of their body. They would clean themselves thoroughly every day. You don't need a bath to wash up, a towel and water basin is plenty.

At one time the pope decreed that you could be excommunicated from the church for bathing.

Can only imagine the amount of cheek clapping that went on in these bath houses. Crazy times.

My neighbor is apparently stuck in those times. Yep, I'm sure of it.
