UPDATE - (2020) water wicking 5-gallon bucket growing system video revisiting how we put them together and answering some viewer questions from this original video.

In this episode, we update on a few of our urban garden boxes, and we discuss and build a water-wicking 5-gallon bucket. The ones we will be using on the rooftop to grow a large portion of our peppers. Let's Get Growing!

Net Pots that I purchased.

Full List of Supplies:
2 - Five gallon (food grade) buckets.
1 - 3 inch Net Pot
1 - 2 foot, 1/2 inch PVC tube, cut at a 45 degree angle at one end.
1 - zip tie
1 - 7/8 drill bit
1 - 3 inch hole saw bit
Safety Glasses...
Other than the drill bits, just multiply the other supplies for as many bucket systems as you need.

My daughters and I want to do a wicking system. I have seen many many ways to do this but I keep going back to this because of the simplicity. We are going to make these for our Spring vegetables. Thank you for sharing this.... and my girls are excited to call the local restaurants for 5 gallon buckets!

Your videos inspired my little adaptation. Ditched the PVC fill tube and added an irrigation hole at the base below the overflow. Setting up automatic watering every 4 days. Thank you!

Very clear instructional video on making these growing buckets. I will be using your setup for the buckets and Leon’s way of fertilizing. Thanks!

Love the idea of the double bucket. so much easier than trying to cut lids to fit etc. I've failed at container gardening in the past d/t plants drying out and my work schedule. I have the land but not the time so I really appreciate people posting how they urban garden, Btw LOVE the kitty video-bomb - Karl is a cutie-pie. Thx

I have watched a bunch of videos on these. You got right to the point. Best tutorial I have seen yet, but that drill, damn is it noisy lol.

Thanks, this process is very simple and less cumbersome, you just need to get an extra bucket. Love it!

Great video thanks for the step by step. For aesthetics and finishing touches, I would probably paint my outer bucket to add a pop of color to the yard! This would be a great project for kids of any age and being able to paint and design the outside of "their" container even more personal. I find most gardeners also have a little creative side to them as well.

I will be planting my first garden this year. In the past it has been tomatoes only. Your videos are great and will refer back to them often. Thank you

Do you pack your soil? Do you saturate your soil with water to start your wicking?

I have roots growing into the water reserve. eventually it started to smell and the plant did not flourish.
I line the top container with landscape fabric and use a clay pot filled with sand as a wick. No matter now tight I button things up the roots find their way down.
I am only going to use it for green peppers or smaller.
Thanks

One note I have, with the 3" hole go forward until the center bit goes through, then drill the main hole in reverse. Give a cleaner cut

I also put a sock around the netcup allowing the water to wick but preventing the soul from escaping through the netcup holes
