Trump promises tariffs to help pay for economic plans

Former President Donald Trump addressed the Economic Club of Chicago and doubled down on applying tariffs to help pay for the costs of his proposed economic plan. Trump affirmed tariffs will keep growth and jobs in the U.S.

US companies pay the tariffs to import materials and products. When the products and materials get here, it's the American people who ends up paying more because the US companies raise the prices to cover the cost.

Tariffs are a tax on imports, and they will raise prices for households and, crucially, for businesses that rely on imported inputs to make their products. Not only will prices rise for the imported products, so will the prices of goods produced at home that compete with imports. That sounds like the opposite of what we need right now.
