The novelization did a lot better at showing Palpatines manipulation in this moment. Before he mentions Darth Plageus The Wise he says that he has been researching into the Sith ever since he started suspecting the Council might accuse him of being involved with one.

Canonically I think the Plagueis story was testing the waters and Sheev was thinking "wow, this guy is an even bigger sucker than I though"

Have you noticed how smart Anakin is as Darth Vader? It's really interesting how Anakin's brain started working only after having his limbs severed off and a major part of his body burnt.

Anakin definitely has more awareness but stopped leveling his Intelligence past 12. He needs 15 Intelligence to automatically unlock information and the dialogue options regarding Midichlorians.

Even as a kid I thought it was a little funky that Anakin didn't question how Palpatine knew about this Sith legend when the Sith operate only as two people entirely, Master and Apprentice. Anakin as a Jedi should have been aware of the Sith Rule of Two. Not to mention as well, Palpatine knew the identity of a reclusive Sith Lord the Jedi didn't even know, Anakin really should have realized then he was dealing with the Sith Lord who started the Clone War.
