Former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte is on the final stretch of his journey to The Hague, after his arrest in Manila yesterday. This marks the biggest step yet in the International Criminal Court's probe into alleged crimes against humanity during a crackdown on drugs that killed thousands. On arrival in the Netherlands, Mr Duterte is expected to be transferred to the ICC's detention unit. Meanwhile, the Philippine Supreme Court has held off on issuing a temporary restraining order on the arrest of the former president. Will Denselow reports from Brussels and Buena Bernal reports from Metro Manila.

This man just did his job as president. He was the only president where I felt proud as a Filipino. Crime rates went down dramatically. Best president

I am a Filipino living in London. Seeing our beloved President Duterte being crucified for protecting his people against criminals makes my soul extremely sad. We love you Tatay Digong. I pray the Universe bless you with good health and peace while in Hague😭😭😭. Please send him back. The Filipino people badly need him🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏.

This is the sad reality in the Philippines. The human rights of the criminals is more important than the human rights of the victims of crimes.

ICC Article 59
Arrest proceedings in the custodial State
1. A State Party which has received a request for provisional arrest or for arrest and surrender shall immediately take steps to arrest the person in question in accordance with its laws and the provisions of Part 9.

2. A person arrested shall be brought promptly before the competent judicial authority in the custodial State which shall determine, in accordance with the law of that State,
that:
(a) The warrant applies to that person;
(b) The person has been arrested in accordance with the proper process; and
(c) The person’s rights have been respected

He was forced into the plane instead of going through the state's judicial authority

Duterte voluntarily turned himself in. He was aware of his impending arrest when he was still in Hong Kong and could've requested asylum in China or Russia, just like Edward Snowden. Yet he returned to the Philippines in order to be arrested because he obviously knows he can't lose. If he were imprisoned, he would become a martyr, and if he were released, he would become a living legend. Regardless, his time on Earth is very limited already since he is 80, so spending time in prison is not any worse than spending it in nursing care back home. He wants to teach the Europeans and their Marcos minions a lesson. Europeans drugged China and killed millions in Asia. He'll tell it to their faces, just as he showed Obama a book of how Americans killed millions in the Philippines.

In my 30-plus years of existence, President Rodrigo Roa Duterte is the only president I believe genuinely cared for the Filipino people. He had his imperfections in many ways, yet he was loved by most Filipinos around the world due to his deep concern for our country, even at the cost of his own life.

The war on drugs brought positive changes in the lives of law-abiding individuals and also to those drug users and drug addicts who chose to surrender and sought rehabilitation.

I stand with and support FPRRD👊🏻👊🏻👊🏻❤️

PRRD DID WHAT HE NEED TO DO, TO RESTORE PEACE AND ORDER IN OUR COUNTRY, HE DID VERY WELL AND MADE US SAFE AND SECURED . WE WERE ABLE TO WALK SAFELY AT NIGHT, HE PROTECTED US FROM THE THIEVES AND RAPIST LOOMING IN THE DARK CORNERS. HOW CAN YOU JUSTIFY A MAN WHO LOVE AND DID GOOD TO HIS PEOPLE BY ELIMINATING THE BAD FORCES (ACCORDING TO THE PHILIPPINES LAW ) OF THE SOCIETY, HOW ICC

The ICC is now perceived as a protector of drug addicts. Instead, it should focus on helping to protect the victims of drug addiction.

I visited Philippines when he was the president I felt safe. Why? Because drug addicts and criminals were scared to commit crime. Police and military gained their respect back from Filipinos. Human rights, think the innocent victims of drugs not just the pusher and users that got killed from the war of drugs of the Republic of the Philippines.

I am a British Filipino citizen, i am proud of DUTERTE's record as president of the Philippines, under his administration the Philippines was a safer country ; less crime, RAPE, drug addicts, killings by knife or gun, less kidnappings, . Yes it was his policy to show no mercy on the drug addicts but he gave them a chance to surrender, millions of drug addicts did surrender and given rehabilitation, out of fear they will be killed by the police, but that is the price to protect the majority of the vulnerable, . Some people re not happy i can understand that but, at what cost? Look whats happening now in the Philippines? we have a president who doesn't care about the citizens, when asked by a reporter "what about the drug addicts?" He replies " I dont care about them, let them do as they usually do, and we will do our usual thing " That is no president! Crime is rampant, more RAPE, MURDER by knife or gun, kidnapping, drug addicts, and drugs is back more than before. Its crazy. People dont feel safe anymore to roam the streets, theyre scared cuz anytime they might gwt killed by drug addicts with knives or guns, if its wrong to protect the majority of citizens by using deadly force or threats against those drug addicts or scumbags, then i dont know whats good if not doing the wrong way? Marcos maybe the president now because majority of who goted for him voted because of the DUTERTE's, they were duped, DUTERTE will forever be President in our hearts...

They died during the war on drugs operation, where criminals violently resisted and fought back. Under Duterte's presidency, law enforcers were ordered to protect themselves and innocent people during these operations, even if it led to deadly confrontations. If deaths occurred, it was not Duterte who killed them but the result of criminals violently attacking law enforcers and endangering innocent lives around them.
