Former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte is held in custody, according to the office of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. His supporters came to the streets and expressed their outrage and sadness upon his arrest on March 11. Duterte was served an Interpol arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court upon his arrival at Manila's main airport. One of the protesters expressed her anger and said, “I'm sad, dismayed, and angry at what happened”. The ICC is investigating his role in overseeing a bloody "war on drugs" that killed thousands of Filipinos. However, Duterte denied the allegations and said he was ‘ready to be arrested if the ICC issued a warrant.’

FORMER PHILIPPINE PRESIDENT RODRIGO R. DUTERTE (FPPRD) HERO OR VILLAIN?

It is very hard for the west to understand the societal milieu in the Philippines especially in Davao City where Duterte started his political career as a mayor. A city where I happened to reside in too, for a decade. Communist vigilantes were doing summary killings and bombings spreading terror in the city on a daily basis. I remember carrying our baby, watching a kid sprawled on the side of the road shot in the head by communists’ “sparrow unit” for a crime of petty theft of less than a dollar item. He was still alive and moving as people gathered around and watched him wiggling with a bullet in his head. Nobody dared to do anything, everyone was scared. That scene haunted me forever.

We left Davao City because of the daily killings and violence perpetrated by the communists. The Philippine military had tried all kinds of approaches within the western-style softball game rules (western style society rules) to fix the problem for so many years but nothing worked until one military officer started using the head-bashing hockey rules (lawless killings) that the communist insurgents used against the civilians themselves, by arming the civilians (Dictator Marcos, father of today’s president disarmed all civilians- that’s what dictatorships do). So tired of the communists’ reign of terror, illegal taxation and murders, this officer used the non-softball, head-bashing hockey rules used by the communist insurgents, and used them against the communists themselves by arming the civilians to fight back against the communists and the group was called “Alsa Masa” - meaning, “we the people rising up against the communists.” This happened about two years after we left Davao City. The Alsa Masa wiped out the communists because armed civilians fought back against them and killed all of them the way they killed helpless unarmed civilians before, because they knew the insurgents.

It solved the communist insurgency violence problem in Davao City. By the time Duterte became mayor of Davao City, a new scourge emerged - drug overdose deaths and drug-related violence became ubiquitous. People were scared to walk the streets of Davao City even as they see hundreds of young people dying from drug overdoses and violence every day. Desperate times (headbashing hockey rules applied on softball western style society) necessitated desperate measures - use head-bashing hockey rules against criminal players who played violent hockey rules in a softball game western-style society. So Duterte used the same Alsa Masa head-bashing hockey rules approach to fix the problem of thugs using head-bashing hockey rules in a western-style softball-ruled society. And it did fix the problem right away.

Davao City became the most drug-free, violence-free, corruption-free and most prosperous crime-free city in the country. People loved what Duterte did in Davao City, not only the people in Davao City but in the entire country. Davao City, the largest city in the Philippines, became the most peaceful and most prosperous city in the Philippines under his watch. When the central Philippines was hit by a disastrous tsunami and cat 5 storm during the presidency of Noynoy Aquino Jr., it was Duterte who went and sent manpower and major aid from Davao City to help thousands of storm victims, not the central government. It was at this point when Duterte became even more endeared and popular to the Filipino people. It became obvious that he did not only love the citizens of Davao City in the southern Philippines but all the people of the Philippines.

When the next presidential election was coming, people “forced” Duterte to run. Even his daughter Sara cut her hair bald to make her father run for president. Why was everybody forcing Duterte to run? Because of the drug plague and drug-related violence that were killing thousands of Filipinos on a daily basis. Duterte never wanted to run as president. But Filipinos knew that only Duterte could stop the daily carnage caused by the drug scourge which was mainly ran by powerful politicians.

Mayor Duterte was forced to run as president by the people. He won by a landslide victory. The drug scourge stopped - literally. He literally saved thousands of Filipinos from dying of drug overdose and drug-related violence through Alsa Masa-style cleansing. Drug criminals and drug users were terrified and literally stopped. The overwhelming majority of Filipinos voted for him to do just exactly that.

You dont apply softball (western style justice and governance) rules in a softball-ruled western style society where criminals pervasively were using head-bashing hockey rules. And he did just that - applied head-bashing hockey rules on criminals that used head-bashing hockey rules in a softball game- ruled society, and the Philippines was drug-free and drug violence-free under his watch. The pervasive culture of corruption in the government also stopped. He also resolved the Muslim insurgency in the Philippines which was never resolved by previous administrations.

That’s why the overwhelming majority of Filipinos (80%) love former President Rodrigo R. Duterte (FPRRD). He is their real hero and wish he is still president today, a country that has become so progressive due to its rich natural resources, brilliant hard-working people, but now, once again, is going through the same cycle of the plague of drug deaths and violence and corruption that became pervasive again after Duterte’s presidency (Philippine presidents can only serve one term of six years). In the eyes of Filipinos he’s their modern hero. He lived in the same humble old house after his presidency. He never laundered nor stole the money of the people unlike the other politicians in the Philippines and in America where they enter politics poor and leave politics as multi-millionaires.

He is indeed a true hero who truly loved the Filipino people. But in the eyes of the corrupt world, he is a criminal. But his legacy will live on in the annals of Philippine history. The man who showed the Filipino people that a peaceful, progressive, drug-free and corruption-free Philippine government and society were possible. It is up for the future Filipino people and politicians to follow his example. He is a hero in the eyes of the Filipino people but a villain in the eyes of criminals and the corrupt western world. What is he guilty of in the eyes of the western world? For not using softball rules in a lawless society of criminals that used head-bashing hockey rules in a softball game (western-style) society.
