Dunkirk 2017
In May 1940, Germany advanced into France, trapping Allied troops on the beaches of Dunkirk. Under air and ground cover from British and French forces, troops were slowly and methodically evacuated from the beach using every serviceable naval and civilian vessel that could be found. At the end of this heroic mission, 330,000 French, British, Belgian and Dutch soldiers were safely evacuated.

I've had the privilege to know a few Second World War veterans in my life, one sadly gone now was at Dunkirk I think described the dread caused by Stukas the best. "Every time I heard those bloody sirens I was convinced I'd never see Norfolk again."

This was a movie that really needed to be seen in IMAX, shit was terrifying.

0:36 what everyone dreads to see when there is no fighter cover. This and “Battle of Britain” had to use RC JU-87s but the effect on screen is still good enough.

I really love their artistic choice to slightly alter the Stuka sound for this scene. Because most people today think of the original Stuka siren as a "mayday!" cartoon sound effect (it was used that way after the war), the sound designer had to find a clever way to reinvent the terror that the sound brought to people in WW2.

I believe that I have read that 350 thousand Brits had retreated to Dunkirk and have always wondered why 350 thousand 303 rifles were not putting a swarm of bullets in the air against the Luftwaffe

Hanz and Fritz in
Present for Dunkirk

Hanz: hey look over there!!!
Fritz: Yankees.
Hanz: let's go meet them for the final time. Good thing Headquarters gave these goodbye bomb. Now how should we do this? The Dive or The Turn Tables...
Fritz: (yes Hanz, these are goodbye bomb) lets just go into The Dive.(shame he's too innocent)
Hanz: OK, The Dive it is.
Fritz: um Hanz, don't forget to turn on your "mini propellers" to let them know we're here.
Hanz: sir yes sir😊!!!
Fritz:
German Pilot: Trigger Finger ready. I'm ready to kill😈.
Hanz: what he say?
Fritz: UM Nothing Hanz.
*Shakes head in disappointment at the Pilot*
Pilot: what?😐

I have the book. It has some pretty good insight into things not covered in the film
