When I was younger I used to think that the siren was the sound of the Stuka cutting through the air as it dived down

My grandmother who lives within biking distance from my house, was 15 when she was a bike messenger in the polish resistance against the germans.

One of the stukas had dropped a bomb and hit the backyard of her house. There is a tree now marking almost dead center of where it hit on the lawn, in which the ground there is still almost a foot lower because of the impression left by the crater.

My gradfather remember the Ju - 87 dive run and the sirens, he was a very young boy hiding in the basement of budlings near Piotrków, Poland 1939. Since that, he never enjoyed the fireworks display on the New Year eve.
The sirens were called Jerichotropmeten or Udetsystem, rumors said that it was Hitler personally to order Junkers factory to mount that system on the aircraft for psychological warfare.

Imagine if they used those sirens today, scaring ISIS like crazy

Hitler had the sirens permanently installed on all dive bombers because he loved the fear it gave the people of where ever he was invading next. ww2 was so fucking scary man. can't even imagine what it really must have been like.

This terrifying sound, just imagine hearing this when you least expect it, when you are sleeping and the sirens go off. Just imagine the horror the allies went through...

According to allied reports they were scary the first time, but then they used it to predict where the bomb was going to drop. A lot of pilots preferred adding whistles to the bombs instead, it was less predictable and was much more terrifying.

Was it really that hard for hollywood to find plane sound effects?

The Stukas were absolutely a nightmare that nobody wanted to hear or see just the fact of how close they come

That sound is absolutely bone chilling. I couldn’t even imagine he feeling of hearing those horns coming down louder and louder.

With respect to both sides of ww2, ya gotta love these planes, and what the pilots could do, as just as well as the mustang. My grandad navigated lancasters, if it wasn't for the war, I know that he would appreciate a beutifull plane, no matter who was the pilot.

The Germans engineering was on another level, it took 9+ countries to take them down and it was still super close

I still remember this sound every night especially during summer months. I set up a net around the bed so they don't suck my blood.
