To experience something like an ego death is to come closer to the truth of life. That death is an illusion. Those who have an ego-death realize that consciousness survives the death of the self. You still exist even when the you that you think you are doesn't.

A guy I know had his heart stop for 2 minutes, and while that happend he was dead. There was nothing. No light, no voice, no sound, no thoughts. It was just like before he was born. True nothingness.
