Mark Ruffalo totally played his part well. I didn't suspect him for a second. Im usually able to call movies out but this one really surprised me and I love it! Great movie!

“The closer you look, the less you see”
Dylan was right in front of their noses the whole time and yet they never saw him as the 5th horsemen.

"How do you let yourself be so blinded by your ego, that you convince yourself that you're one step ahead when you're always two steps behind"
FAVOURITE QUOTE. NO CAP.

As a Mark Ruffalo fan, I felt bad about his character getting humiliated by the four magicians again and again.
That's why I found this twist so awesome. While I only liked this movie (which does have a number of flaws), this twist alone made me LOVE this movie.

Dylan was so clever. Pretending that he was someone trying to track down the 5th Horseman when he was the 5th Horseman all along. Truly great magicians have very carefully laid out plans to make an illusion and he made the great illusion that he was totally clueless when all the while, Thaddeus was the clueless one. Thaddeus thought that he was always 1 step ahead but he was actually 2 steps behind.

M. Night Shyamalan is jealous of that twist.

What I love is the change in Mark Ruffalo's expression from the harrowed,
exhausted, outwitted agent into the brains behind everything.

It's so amazing when you realize that the good, hardworking Dylan Rhodes
was actually an act...it's a Robert Green 'Law of power' in action
"Always appear dumber than your mark" portrayed to perfection!

You do not know how long l've waited, to see the look in your eyes.... What do l want??? l want you to spend the rest of your life in this cell, staring at the four walls and wondrin' how you missed it. How you let yourself to be blinded by your Ego, and how you convinced yourself that you are one step ahead, when you are always two steps behind...

Whatta!! beautiful lines. 😱

Now that I've seen the sequel, it melts my brain to think on how many levels of pretending they both were in this scene.

(And I guess there are 3K more people who think that the final twist in the sequel was bullshit)

I love rewatching this, knowing the twist, and realizing what emotions were actually behind the words “You pissed them off.”

I actually saw this movie three times in theaters. The first time was just for myself. The next two was to see the audience's reaction to it. I will always remember them reacting to this moment. The second time I heard a woman chuckling in surprise. The third I remember hearing the girl next to me whisper "I knew it!" Even though she had only just predicted it seconds before the reveal.

I've heard plenty of people say this ending made no sense. I'll admit it would help if they gave a few more subtle hints throughout the film but he's a magician, of course he'd be able to be the main guy chasing after the four horsemen and be the fifth horseman. That's the whole point of magic tricks, they're planned ages in advance and the person performing them is often very good at knowing how to conceal anything that would make the performance obvious. To be honest, the reaction to the plot twist is pretty similar to a lot of reactions to magic tricks 'Oh it's obviously camera trickery', 'Oh he can't be the main villain, he was the guy going after them.' It's kind of the whole point of magic tricks that there's a physical solution to them and not camera trickery. Or in the case of this plot twist, the resolution makes sense and isn't just the writer making it up as they go along. That said, some slightly more obvious hints would've been helpful so it was the last person we'd expect but make more sense to people when he was revealed.
