They showed this in a domestic violence class (Seminar for the idiots) at my school, because although it’s portrayed as a joke, this is one very real thing that can happen right before domestic violence starts.

This is what my mom had to go through. She was a victim of domestic violence for years but fortunately she grabbed me and my brothers one night and ran and never looked back. We were homeless and had to stay with family and friends until she got on her feet. I’m just glad my mom left before it was too late.

To everyone saying the writers must have gone through this, it's a pretty common trope. Wife burns dinner, husband gets angry and/or violent. I knew where the scene was going immediately once Meg said "realistic home ec class"

The domestic violence bit is too real, but the most unrealistic thing is a modern-day High School still having a home economics class
