Turkey and Egypt set a timeframe to restore their ties on Thursday as Egypt’s Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry touched down in Ankara for talks with his counterpart, Mevlut Cavusoglu.
This is the latest step to restore frayed ties after nearly a decade of strained relations between the two countries, and comes less than a month after Cavusoglu officially visited Cairo.
Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan refused to recognise Abdel Fattah el-Sisi as Egypt's legitimate leader after he led a military coup in 2013 against Mohamed Morsi, the country’s first democratically elected president. Morsi died in custody in 2019, and was critical of Sisi's subsequent crackdown and repression.
