When F-4 Phantom II Outran The F/A-18 Hornet In 1977 #shorts

In March 1977, the F/A-18 Hornet was put through testing with "safety chase" flights in case there was a problem. One day, an F-4 Phantom was sent on a safety chase to make sure the F/A-18 could reach its top speed of Mach 1.8 in the time promised after accelerating from Mach 0.9. The mission began at 50,000 feet, and both aircraft entered full afterburner mode. In the beginning, the Hornet was able to accelerate faster than the Phantom and gain a lead of around a quarter of a mile, but the Phantom was one of the fastest aircraft. The F-4 was closing quickly and was approaching Mach 2 when the F/A-18 reached speed of Mach 1.6. The Hornet pilot abruptly began a sharp left turn without signaling. When the F-4 pilot hauled up his nose to gain altitude, he did so quickly that the huge needle on his altimeter appeared to be spinning, indicating that he was climbing at a rate of 82,125 feet per minute. At 62,000 feet, he rolled upside down to halt his ascent when he realized he was able to view two horizons in addition to the deep, luminous blue of space.

Hate it when people don’t signal at Mach 1.6. So annoying 🙄

The Phantom was proof that if you put powerful enough engines on it, you could get a brick to fly.

Silly hornet, put on your turn signal next time

The f4 pilot looked out and saw the lunar rover and noticed he could read the plaque left by the astronauts, it was at that moment he realized...

The first YF-17 prototype rolled out at Hawthorne on 4 April 1974; its first flight at Edwards AFB came on 9 June. It flew for 61 minutes reaching an altitude of 18, 000 feet and a maximum speed of 610 miles per hour. The second YF-17 prototype first flew on 21 August.Through 1974, the YF-17 competed against the General Dynamics YF-16. The two YF-17 prototypes flew 288 test flights, totaling 345.5 hours. The YF-17 attained a top speed of Mach 1.95and was sent to NASA's Dryden Research Center for base drag studies from 27 May to 14 July 1976 prior to the first F/A-18 prototype under development....The F-18 wasn't even around in 1977.

Phantom...stil the most awesome jet of all time.

The F-4 Phantom was the equivalent of anything flying in its time. It is still a formidable weapon in the hands of a skillful pilot. It is too bad it cannot be made stealthy.

Some trivia. The RF-4 is a reconesance version, it has a suit of large heavy cameras in the nose, no cannon, and is generally sleeker than other Phantoms. It has no slats on the wing leading edge and a few other gizmos I won't go into detail. These can fly high and very fast, over Mach 2.35.
There are a few still in use today.

The F4 Phantom was built for speed and is still formidable.

F4 was a sledgehammer when we needed it

Wow.... say what you will... but those F4s have great engines!
Powerful and apparently not needing lots of oxygen. Thin air way up there!

F-4, brick, enough thrust.... Weve all heard it a million times

Well, hell: both the F-4 and the F-14 were capable of Mach 2+: the F-18 isn't that fast.

In a world of Rhino’s The F-4 once again proves there can be only one

it's well known that fighter jets of that era were faster than what we have now, just not as proficient.

The F4 was America’s proof to the world you could make a brick fly if you gave it enough horsepower. A truly great airplane.

That's why they call the jet "phantom." Now you see it now where are you? Up up and away.
