In this edition of Scenic Stops we stop by Central Insurance Company’s Fire Museum. We talk to Bill Purmort, president and chairman of Central Insurance about the history of fire departments and some of the old tools used to fight fires.

My dad grew up in Baltimore City in the 1920’s and I remember him telling me about the insurance company fire fighters. In Baltimore they would fight the fire along side the City firefighter but they were primarily there to reduce the insurance claim. When there was a fire in a store he remembered the insurance fire fighters would cover the merchandise with blankets he thought were fire resistant to keep things from being damaged. Sometimes they would try to remove items from the building while it was on fire.
