What is Home Care?

So, what exactly is home care nursing? It is why you became a nurse. You became a nurse to treat the whole system: the patient, the family, the illness, the doctors—you touch every aspect. A nurse in home care is like the hub of a wheel, and you’re in touch with every spoke of that wheel.

Maybe you haven’t heard of it—or maybe you have, and it just doesn’t seem like something a nurse does until later in their career. I mean, after nursing school, the understood path is to work in the hospital. But why? There are other options, and that’s why we want to set the record straight.


Think of it this way: in a hospital, there are five different people you have to call to manage different things with your patient. In home care, you learn all that stuff. Knowing how to work the ventilator, changing a trach, cracking an oxygen tank, working an Ambu bag—that’s all part of the job. It’s empowering to be able to take complete care of your patient.

For those who assume home care isn’t skill-intensive, or it’s glorified babysitting, or it’s where “old nurses go to die,” you couldn’t be further from the truth. The care you get to provide is so detailed, it’s phenomenal. Your skill set won’t get rusty; in fact, you’ll learn new skill sets. And BAYADA provides continuing education all the time. Most don’t realize until they try it, but home care is a collaborative team approach to nursing. It’s teamwork, even though the care you’re providing is one-on-one.

I'm a retired Home Health Aide, I see they are still trying to knock down home care, that nurse was right. We do everything from empty a urine bag, changing a occupy bed we do everything. No body there just us and the patient and a telephone. Been there and done that!!!

THIS HOME HEALTH CARE BECAUSE YOU HAVE TO GO AS FAR INTO THE MEDICAL ASPECTS OF THE JOB KNOW HOME CARE IS JUST DOING MORE LIKE A HOUSE KEEPING AND ADULT SITTER NONE MEDICAL JOB.
