As a fellow orchestra teacher, I hate to hear this. When I started 9 years ago, kids had respect for the amount of money spent to give them instruments to play, nice music stands, and supplies. This year, I had a girl break her violin over another girl's head, and they cant even press charges over the hospital bill for my innocent kid to cover the stitches in her head. I was pregnant when this happened and feared for my unborn child's safety with the amount of stress I was feeling trying to keep them from fighting. Never in a music class have I had kids feel unsafe. Its disgusting.

Parents don't want to parent their children, but they don't want the teachers to either, so we're all fucked. (EDIT) When I say this, I don't think that teachers should have to parent children, I think that they should be able to correct them.

To all the parents out there....I was a high school teacher for many years, now a college teacher. My son graduated from the same high school I taught at and he always was mad in those years because "his friends got away with stuff while I'm always punished!" It was rough being hated through those years, but I knew teaching him boundaries was the right thing to do. He is now 38, and recently he shared with me that so many of the people he knew in high school that got away with so much are having major issues in their adult life. Many are alcoholics, drug addicts, or cannot keep a job. My son, has 3 college degrees, has an amazing career, travels the world, and happy with his life. The first person you have to learn to manage, is yourself. Discipline and punishments are not cruel. Letting kids think they have no boundaries, and they can do anything they want, or act anyway they want without consequences is cruel.

I had a 4 year old difficult child kick me in the face in front of the mother. She cooed over and coddled him wondering what made him so upset. I'm standing there with broken $700 eyeglasses hanging off my face and had a black eye for Christmas. Never an apology from the child/mother or disciplinary action from the school. I thought going from middle school to early childhood would be different. Nope.

As a school bus driver I can tell you this is correct. Can't even pay attention to the road. I have never been so drained from a job.

The worst part is some parents do not care at all. You call, text home, email and let them know everything that went down and you get nothing, no response. Parents severely underestimate their impact. If mom & dad don’t care, it’s going to be very very difficult, if not downright impossible to get a kid to care/ behave.

As a senior in high-school nearly 4 years ago I volunteered during my credit recovery period to go and help students in our beginning choir class since we had a new teacher who was not well versed in teaching boys how to sing as she was a female singer. I witnessed multiple girls in that class for the entire hour disrespect, ignore, and verbally abuse eachother and the teacher. I Brought it up with both the vice principal and principal, and within a week we had a meeting with me, the principals, the new choir teacher, and the old one who just retired and I had a great respect for. We organized a meeting with these girls during class, to pretty much shame them, infront of everyone else showing that her behavior was unacceptable, cause it wasn't just this class she was doing this in, and it was recorded and sent to her parents. Afterwards her attitude didn't change so we had to advise her to either drop out that class or they'll have to take her out of it which will go on her record. She freaked out and tried to go at the new teacher, she was expelled soon after, this was a 15 year old, who couldn't handle a basic level extracurricular.

All starts at home folks. What happened to accountability?! I feel sorry for teachers who try to correct children’s bad behavior, then all of sudden parents play “ you can’t discipline my child” card.

I left teaching because...a 4th grader brought a butcher knife into my classroom in his booksack, I was told by a student, "I don't have to fkn listen to you, another said My mama said I don't have to listen to you, another kid told me he didn't like me cause of my skin color, fights on the playground, fights in the hall, fights in the classroom, kids throwing desks, drunk parents showing up in the classroom, parents physically abusing their kids, damages to my vehicle on school property, two of my students shot to death, etc. I wanted to be a teacher so much. All I wanted was to make a difference in this world. The joke is on me.

I live in Virginia. Recently some schools in Richmond made all of the kids turn in their cell phones at the beginning of the day, to get them back at the end of the day. This reduced violence in the classrooms by 90 percent.

The pain in that teachers voice broke my heart. I swear it's going to become normal for teachers and students fighting because these teachers are tired of dealing with people's disrespectful children.

what's sad about this teachers situation is that music teachers don't get a lot of funding from the school for the instruments, so destroying her instruments is such a crappy thing to do because she could possibly have to pay out of pocket like many other music and art teachers do.

My daughter quit in 2022 to save her mental and physical health (elementary). After the kids came back to school full-time following the C~19 nightmare, same problems- uncontrollable behaviors, not listening or following instructions, etc. I'm very concerned that we have lost part of this generation.

This behavior comes through two things, social media, but more to the point, parental neglect.
