A teacher in Western Australia gets $99 923 for 1st yr and a senior teacher gets $111 089 and teachers don't get shot. Teachers have to be valued because they are responsible for educating the next generation of leaders.

My sister went to college to be a high school Math teacher but after 2 years she switched to teaching special needs teens because she said the money wasn’t worth the hassles of paying outta pocket for school supplies & the labyrinth of ways she was told to teach. What she could & couldn’t say to high school kids. $30 to $35, 000 a year is a crime to pay the people who teach the young adults that will shape our future. We’re literally setting ourselves up for failure.

It's not a side of teaching they don't see...it's a side of teaching that they don't WANT to see...they call teachers groomers, pay them next to nothing, brow beat and bully (children, parents and school boards), expect them to teach lies, protect children and now carry an effing gun, all while being demeaned. I taught for five years and when I quit found out I had a ton more money in my pocket, especially in September. I salute every teacher who stays the course and will back and support them to the end for the amazing job they do.

“In a completely rational society, the best of us would be teachers and the rest of us would have to settle for something less, because passing civilization along from one generation to the next ought to be the highest honor and the highest responsibility anyone could have.”

This didn't even go into people accusing teachers of CRT and the mask wars. I knew a new teacher who was so excited 5 years ago to start teaching who quit over all the GOP school war stuff

My girlfriend is almost 60k in debt because she wanted to be a teacher. She is now applying for a job at the library. I hope she gets the job. She will likely just sub and work at the library. It'll pay enough and she may not have to be treated like most teachers are. Oh and she usually spends at least 5%of her pay on her classroom and students. When she was a substitute she had a Healthcare plan that without the ACA would have cost her about 70% of her pay. Which is so messed up. The Healthcare was terrible and the schools are not funded properly. This country does not want an educated population. Our politicians want religious extremist and ignorant conspiracy theorist

When I went to America a well educated friend said openly. “I don’t have kids, why would I want my taxes to go towards education.”

You’ve created a society that values individual wealth over societal wealth. This is one of the results. Good job America.

A student threatened to kill me and I got fired. I had no support whatsoever. I will never step foot in a classroom again after devoting 10 + years to my craft. By the way, I was teaching in Colorado with a Missouri Teaching License and was therefore, only paid $16/hour. People are willing to pay 10x more for someone to take care of their money than to teach their children.

As the husband of a retired 41 year educator,
This young lady is spot on!
Educators are very special folks!
These people need our support, now more than ever!

Teacher here .THAT is exactly it!! There IS NOT a Teacher Shortage . There's A LOT of overly qualified Teachers who aren't Teaching because every single year it gets harder and harder To get those Teachers back into the classroom >. It's so EASY Here are 4 things that would bring my fellow Teachers back into the classroom. Smaller class sizes> A full time Aid in each classroom > More pay > More respect and appreciation . Lastly can the Right Wing stop hating us partly because we belong to a Union ??

The US is fucked. Both teachers and nurses are leaving their industries.

I have friends in the teaching field. I can tell you that most of them quit after a shelf life of 5 years or less. The number of hours spent preparing classes, communicating with parents/ principals, dealing with students, finding solutions to teach during the pandemic, and sometimes at the risk of their lives, etc. Most teachers will tell you government doesn't understand the demands of their field and doesn't realize that modifying the curriculum will have a greater impact on students in the long run. It's not a surprise certain students cannot read, write, calculte or understand a basic piece of article properly at the college level. Some parents behave worst than students. Either they don't want you to teach/ discipline their kids, don't care or think they know better what should their children learn. Babysitting is not the job of a teacher. They are preparing kids for the future. So we should at least understand and listen to them when they are telling us that they are struggling in this environment. I read that Ron DeSantis, because of the shortage he helped created, want veterans and their spouses in the classroom teaching. Not to be dismissive of veterans, but to put an unqualified individual in the classroom to teach is ludicrous. Ask yourself what kind of country you want for tomorrow!

This is my last year teaching. I resigned June 24th. I am sure I will miss it, however I spent 6 years getting my degree, and I am not about to have parents with no idea of what goes into teaching telling me what to teach and how to teach. Having all of these practices, fire drills, active shooter on campus, stranger danger etc...when do we get to actually teach? I am fortunate that I got hired as a data miner/analyst for an aerospace company. 2 days in the office, 3 days working from home, and a 6 figure salary. At 5:30 my day is done, no parent calls, no papers to correct, no running out to postal annex to make work sheet copies paid for out of my pocket. (One copy machine at school for 22 teachers). I wish those staying in the profession the best of luck, after seeing how these parents behaved towards teachers during the pandemic was the catalyst for me, it was then I realized that parents don't really value teachers, they see us as glorified babysitters.

My dad taught for 40 years in this country. I would never be a schoolteacher in the USA, I got to meet "the parents" when they would come into my dad's classroom with a completely nonverbal kid in a wheelchair with the equivalent of a 3 year old's emotional maturity at age 15 and INFORM my dad that their kid was just like Rain Man and they wanted him to find their "special ability", and God help him if he didn't. He was the only teacher who lasted more than 2 years in that district, and he worked there for the last 30 years of his career. It never got better and, fun fact, no teacher who signs up nowadays can get even close to the amount of money my dad was making by the end of his career without a damn Ph.D, a spouse or partner also working full-time, and a coaching position, and we were poor AF... and my mom was a public defender.... My whole family was a case study in public service jobs nobody respects enough to treat with basic dignity so us kids learned real quick never to volunteer for anything. If they want me to teach, they can pay me as much as much as my education cost or they can hire a goddamn pedophile with no qualifications for all I care: I didn't breed because I saw what they were doing to my generation and I didn't want to curse anybody else.
-Your friendly neighborhood Gen X'er with zero influence, less money than their parents, and no damn options left.

I am a teacher. One time a student raiser her hand and asked "Why were you up at 11 last night. I was outside your house at 11 and your lights were on". Worked a bunch of jobs, but I have never been asked why I was up so late at night. BTW I was up grading papers, and continued to be up until 1 AM to do so. I don't do it for the money (obviously) but I do it for my students. We all do. Please, leave us alone!

I was on track to get a teaching degree before the city closed 50 schools and laid us all off just as my student teaching was to begin.
I went through a financial crisis for nearly four years trying to get back on track while thousands of others were also in free fall.
I'm driving a city bus now. Make about the same money as I would have in a classroom.
When I talk to former colleagues they tell me how getting out is their goal at this time.
It's not the children. It's these grown politicians who are acting like children.

If only our corporate overlords would do their "jobs" for the love of the work, instead of obscene salaries, stock options, and company perks! Only then could we expect teachers should do the same.

My teacher wife only makes $30, 000 and the out of pocket thing is true.
We spend $1000-2000 per year on teaching and protective supplies.

Conservative teachers are voting against their own interests, probably one of the biggest issues.
