Pilots THROW OUT documents?? #shorts

Did you know that crew on the Avro Vulcan got rid of all their secret documents in mid-air?
During the Falkland war, the Brits used the slightly aged Avro Vulcan to bomb a runway on the small island of Port Stanley. On their return to the Ascension islands, they had an engine failure and had to divert to Rio de Janerio. The crew was worried that the Brazilians might search their plane for secret documents regarding the war. So during the approach, one of the crew opened the cockpit window and threw all important documents overboard and into the sea!
Now you know. Like and follow for more aviation facts every day.

The documents were in a weighted bag to ensure that they sank.

They protected their secrets from the Brazilians, but every dolphin in the Atlantic learned them. Too bad no one has discovered how to talk with them yet.

And now a bunch of fish are selling all the UK's secrets on the dark web. 😢

"Slightly old" may be the biggest understatement of the year. The Vulcan was pushing 30 years at the time, designed by the same people who designed the Lancaster. It had antiquated guidance computers and was retired right after the Black Buck mission was completed

First, it was the bottom hatch, since none of the cockpit windows open on the Vulcan. It took 2 guys, one holding the other so he didn't go out too, and there were huge issues reclosing the hatch too.
Secondly, there was no engine failure on the Vulcan, but a failure to refuel due to fuel hose issues, meaning they were running out of fuel by the time they reached Rio..
Lastly, it wasn't carrying bombs, but American secretly supplied Anti radar missiles, one of which was stuck on the rails despite efforts to ditch it. This led to that being taken by the Brasílians upon the inspection of the Vulcan in Rio.
There were a total of 6 Black Buck missions flown by Vulcan crews from the Ascension Islands to the Falkland Islands during that war, each taking a huge number of tankers to get there and back.

1) Falklands War not Falkland.
2) Port Stanley is not an island.
3) "Threw" not "through".

Note: The individual islands technically don’t have official names, though East Falkland is the name most commonly used for the island where Port Stanley is. Port Stanley is the town name

The Islands were called the Falklands. The main Settlement was Port Stanley..

I know this exact story, I've been onboard the Vulcan from the story with permission from the Museum it's at! It's Vulcan XM597 and the mission was titled Black Buck 6. Three parts of the story were wrong though, the objective of the mission was to use shrike missiles to hit Argentine Radar stations, not to bomb the Port Stanley Airfield, and it wasn't an engine failure, but rather the refuelling probe on its nose snapped on return, which caused the diversion. The story about throwing documents out is real, however they were thrown out of the crew access hatch on the bottom of the cabin and not the cockpit window. I remember speaking with a member of the crew for Black Buck 6, stating as well as removing the documents, they also had to shake the plane to try and remove two shrike missiles which were still attached to the pylons, one came off, but one stuck on and was confiscated by the Brazilians upon arrival.

They had to borrow a refuelling probe off a museum for this mission.

The small island was not called Port Stanley.

I didn’t know it was because of an engine failure I read that it was because the air to air refuelling probe snapped

"Slightly aged". That's a nice way of saying 'fucking decrepid'.

Port Stanley is a town on the Falkland Islands. It is not an island.

The Vulcan only looked like it was super sonic when in fact it was a sub sonic bomber! Still beautiful

You spoilt that by referring to the "small island of Port Stanley". Stanley is not an island, it is the capital of the territory and is located on East Falkland which is almost a third of the size of Wales. Is that small?

Refueling probe broke and they would have run out of fuel...no engine failure, also they trew the docs out of the crew door under the nose, not out of the window

I'd love to see one of those flying in person, the videos look amazing: it looks like those huge dogs that don't know they're huge dogs. But it screams while flying instead of sitting in your lap.

One of my gliding flying instructors 30 years ago was part owner of a Vulcan bomber!
