In March 2023, OceanGate chief executive Stockton Rush and his wife Wendy flew into London from the US. This wasn't a holiday, it was a trip to meet the Dawood family, to convince them that despite rumours about safety Oceangates’ Titan submersible was ‘safer than crossing the street’ and diving down to the depths of the ocean to see the Titanic wreck was the trip of a lifetime.

This is the story of the Titan disaster...

I prefer exploring the deep blue from my high resolution screen while sampling cured meats and aged cheeses

Stockton Rush was such a scumbag. He didn't choose carbon fiber hull because it was safe (many experts warned him that it wasn't safe), he chose it because it was cheaper. Stockton Rush didn't call tourists (tourists) but classified them as "specialists" because tourists can legally sue if something goes wrong, "specialists" are classified as willing experts and thus can't sue. So Stockton Rush re-classified them to avoid being sued. The submersible also had ZERO safety features. Stocton Rush even fired the engineer that tried warning him of the dangers of the carbon fiber hull. He was such a scumbag.

The way he carelessly tossed that game controller in the video was such a red flag as to how serious the guy was.

Titan was doomed to fail from the start. The fact they were able to descend and ascend as many times as they did before the disaster is nothing short of a miracle. Stocktons ego is what killed everyone.

This is hands down one of the best documentaries made about the Titan Disaster. It’s the first time I learned about how the Dawood’s were convinced to join the expedition. May these innocent souls rest in peace. 😔🙏🏼

I remember an interview where James Cameron said carbon fiber is very good for keeping extreme pressure contained and that's why it's good in space. But it's not good at keeping pressure out and that's why it's terrible underwater. That info made it's way to Stockton and he ignored it apparently.

Idk why but I can’t get enough of the Titan sub documentaries. I think the entire thing is just something right out of a book. It has lessons to be learned and also a bunch of old money folks following a fool to their demises.

I work for the Submarine Rescue for the Navy. I was the man on duty that night, bout 12am I had received a call informing me that there was a downed submarine. I rushed into work arrived at 1am. I remember pulling up as much specifications on the ship as we could. In the conference room we were in agreement we would never get on that death trap. I'll never forget the phone call with the mothership, I believe it was the lead engineer who lead the talk and passed on information to us. Things that would help in the possibility of a rescue, although there were immediate red flags. One I particularly remember, we had asked if rescue became available at set times i.e 60hrs or 55. What would pressure be inside titan, this is important because placing them in a decompression chamber if they make it to the surface would be priority number one at that point. They said "we have never thought about that before", I remember everyone looking around the room astonished. I'll never forget the dread in the voice of the men on the other side. At one point a man on the line said they had already expected catastrophe. My heart goes out to the families and I hope this is a lesson to would be travelers that in the submarine force, instructions and manuals are written in blood.

One of the most disgusting things about Stockton Rush was citing the safety record of the deep sea submersible community, a community he never listened to, a community he disparaged, a community whose experience and best practice he refused to follow and a community he threatened with legal action if they spoke out, all to keep the money rolling in.
The reason why the deep sea submersible safety record was so good was the engineers and leaders behind it and their insistance on best practice and over engineering. It was a recognition that safety could not be compromised. All of this was unimportant to Rush.

I'm 31 and I've been fascinated with the Titanic ship since I was a child. There is no way I'd ever want to visit it in person even if I had $250k to throw around. We have advanced tech that can show us what Titanic looks like today in the comfort of our home. Going down into the depths of the ocean on a trip that will take hours sounds like a total nightmare to me even if the Sub was 5 star rated.

NASA and Boeing has denied any involvement in the construction of this pig.

Watching James Camerons documentary about going to the bottom of the Challenger Deep, seeing all the planning and meticulous testing that went into his trip and seeing only Cameron go down there alone and then retiring the vessel after the expedition and then comparing that trip ro Ocean Gate and their Carbon fiber tube the contrast is clear.

If someone comes to my house and tells me that traveling to the bottom of the ocean is safer than crossing the street I’m going to laugh them all the way out the door. Are you kidding me?

the hull was replaced in 2020 and was supposed to be replaced again in 2022, but it cost a million dollars every time so of course stockton tried to squeeze an additional year out of it. in that carl stanley interview he said the crackling never fully stopped even after returning to the surface, which is crazy

No one backed the Titan. An engineer said there's no way this would survive.

I'd heard somewhere about this thing that at the depths they were at. the pressure was such that the implosion was to have happened 4 times faster than you can blink your eye. To go from complete conscious human to being turned into paste in that time frame is just amazing to consider.

I guess I have a different opinion on what a "dream trip" is. 4000 meters down in the north Atlantic ocean isn't it.

Really cool way to experience an actual meet and greet with the passengers and crew of the RMS Titanic!

Paying tourists have more legal rights than do paid crew members so rush always called them “mission specialists” not tourists. That was a slick dodge that should have raised red flags all over.

I love the joystick of the Banana Boat. How clever.! You can put it everywhere, and by accident maybe sit on it and break it.
Batteries NOT included.
