This account is far too kind to Russia. The most likely sequence was a handling mishap with a torpedo made dangerous by management incompetence and zero maintenance. It split open causing an explosion and fuel fire. The warheads cooled off after about the right time. Kursk was raised but not until a Dutch salvage company had sawn off the bow and torpedo compartment.

I was a senior survivor qualified person on submarines so I got to learn a lot about this accident. It was a design flaw that caused that compartment to flood and pressurize.

I've never heard of a more self-defeating entity, than the Russian military. Literally, the only thing that levels the playing field for them against any other modern military, is their nuclear arsenal. And even that comes into question, based on reports of improper handling and disrepair.

I can't imagine how horrible that must have been for the men trapped in that tube as it slowly flooded, watching their death creep up, inch by inch, know that they'd be taking their last breaths and then drown. I hate the thought of them dying like that.

Also reportedly (but not confirmed) the detachable sos buoy was welded in place during a previous mission to prevent accidental activation and giving away their location. This was designed to automatically deploy on destruction, float to the surface, and broadcast a distress beacon - making locating the vessel much simpler.

If this was operational, the russians would immediately know there was an issue and the location of the sub
