My father, who was a sailor in WWll, actually cried about this tragic event when it happened.

As a submariner during the Vietnam era, I have imagined myself in that horrible situation many times.
There is no excuse for these guys not being rescued.

I’m Russian. I was a kid at that time, and I remember watching news every time and being worried about the guys on Kursk. It was one of the saddest stories I remember of that time.

Being former Navy, it saddens me to hear of any sailor from any country dying a needless death.

Those 23 sailors waited for rescue that never came. They gave their lives to a country that didn't give any kind of shit about them. It's a terribly sad story. I couldn't imagine slowly suffocating and finally realizing no help was coming.

A lot of things got neglected in the Russian military at this time. Including maintenance on torpedoes. Seal break down, things leak, chemicals mix that aren't supposed to mix, or come in contact with a heat source.

This reinforced my opinion that I don't ever want to be on a submarine. 🥺

Old torpedoes. The Russian Navy was almost bankrupt at that time. Doubtlessly they cut corners on safety and inspections. Those torpedoes never should have even put to sea.

As a Fire Controlman from a US submarine the part of a US torpedo entering the torpedo room of the Kursk is pure fiction. It would have exploded on contact.

Crazy thing is, when the fleet commander in charge of the exercise realized that something was wrong, he did nothing, fearing he’d be held accountable. When the foreign aid finally arrived to help with a rescue sub, they were told they had to stay several miles out. Finally a Russian Admiral arrived and told them to just go down make sure there was no survivors so they could get it over with. “They’re probably dead already” kind of though.

As a veteran submariner myself, my heart breaks for those men and their families.
The fact that Russia chose to leave the bow below says it all. If there was evidence that the Kursk went down due to a US sub, you better believe that no matter what danger may have been involved, they would have found a way to get it up to prove it. Now. Had it been a malfunctioning torpedo, what's a better way to hide it than to leave it at the bottom? Lastly, if they had a part of a US sub, they would have pulled that to the surface for sure.
Sadly, I think this was a mechanical malfunction.

Russian sailors lives could have been saved had they accepted international help. Pure speculation though.

I know nothing about anything regarding this, but... it seems to me, if the captain had enough time to write a note about survivors, he would likely have mentioned that the sub had been attacked by US torpedoes.

The horror of what those sailors went through regardless if they were Russian or not is frightening. RIP to all those who perished and prayers from the USA .

Evidence gathered after the fact pointed directly to a torpedo malfunction aboard Kursk. There was no collision or "coverup". It's heartbreaking to know the guys in the after torpedo room waited for days to be rescued by a government too prideful to acknowledge it needed a hand.
