Genius Construction: The Gigantic Self-Sufficient Icebreaker | FD Engineering

Get ready to embark on a journey like no other aboard "The Commandant Charcot". This extraordinary vessel is the only cruise ship that can navigate through the thickest ice of the Arctic Ocean and the most hostile seas of the Antarctic. Incorporating technology never before seen on a cruise ship, “The Commandant Charcot” took six years to build and involved hundreds of engineers and workers all over Europe. Join us on a ten-day cruise around the Svalbard Archipelago in the Far North as we reveal the features of this unique vessel.

You'll discover what makes "The Commandant Charcot" a true technological marvel through unprecedented access to the ship's most intricate facilities, stunning computer-generated images, and first-hand accounts from its designers. Find out what it takes to build a ship that can withstand the extreme pressure of the ice, and navigate in reverse to carve its way through it. And in the most remote areas of the planet, the ship can also produce its own electricity and drinking water for total autonomy. Don't miss this opportunity to witness the incredible capabilities of "The Commandant Charcot".

It's the greatest thing that has ever been conceived or built. ~ The French are so modest.

Making an engineering documentairy and then using ancient and useless measurement systems never ceases to amaze me. At least mention the measurements in units the entire world uses and understands. Even the US doesn't use those units in engineering or science.

Incredible what humans can acheive yet there are some who make weapons and war instead of greatness. This is greatness.

As a recreational traveller, I want the captain to explain how his icebreaker performs in stormy weather. As I have experienced the Drake Passage on an expedition ship ( Silversea Explorer) with my sea legs fully operational, how will his vessel perform in 10 metre waves in the open waters of the North Atlantic or the Drake passage. His assurance will determine my future bookings ex Melbourne, Australia, Southern Hemisphere.

What about a drone instead of a helicopter?

It doesn't have a bubble system to break up the ice?

I've seen hydroplanes breaking ice. Would that not be even more efficient than this type of icebreaker? Or is this more a cruise ship/icebreaker than just an icebreaker?

At 6:10 they show -28.5 F temp when sea ice forms, that seems a little on the cold side for that to occur.

What do the cabins look like? How's the food? Are they as impressive as the rest of it?

The other day, a polar bear gave me a call. He sounded quite frustrated and said, “You won’t believe this, but a big ship sliced right through my daily work route on the ice!” Apparently, he had been trying to make his way across for five days, but the ice still too thin to hold it together, and kept breaking apart. It seems even polar bears aren’t immune to the troubles of modern tourism! He sighed and mentioned that now he’d have to start looking for a detour or other job. “It’s hard enough finding food, and now this! Can’t they see the ice is our highway?”

50:25 - All waste is taken off board on land when they arrive at port... to be thrown in the ocean in another place?

From $6K to $73K that's the minimum range of profit return every week I thinks it's not a bad one for me, now I have enough to pay bills and take care of my family.
