From Beach Waste to Camper Vans - Studio Vans Camper Kits

Studio Vans is based in Benbecula, Uist, in the Outer Hebrides, Scotland, and specialised in modular camper van interiors made from recycled and sustainable materials. They even take Ocean Plastic, waste plastic that is collected from the beach, and turn it into beautiful yet practical components for their camper vans.

In this video we visit the team at Studio Vans, Benbecula, who make a modular camper van system that you can have fitted at their workshop in the Outer Hebrides, or can be sent to you to be fitted at home or at a local workshop to you.

At the heart of Studio Vans’ ethos is the use of sustainable materials, and making good use of ocean plastic washed up on the beaches in the island. This plastic is recycled and currently makes the worktops in the vans - although the team is hoping to expand how this is used in the future.

Being a modular system, it can go from van to van, so even if the van itself expires, you can take the interior and put it into another van. This makes it the ideal solution for people considering purchasing an EV in the near future, but are not quite ready to commit to electric yet. You can fit the kit to a diesel van now, and move it to an electric van when the time comes.

Being a kit, you can also start small and see what works for you before upgrading or adding to it down the line.

Andrew, this is a wonderful video, and takes your channel to a complete new audience. As a Scott who’s spend 20 years in Hong Kong, (10 of which were on a beautiful beach), I have seen first hand on a daily basis how the plastic problem only gets worse. It is delightful to see this much needed innovation come into vanlife, from the beach clean up, to the reuse of plastic waste, to energy consumption. I hope they are hugely successful. I spent the most beautiful day yesterday watching your Hebrides video’s as I’m planning a trip to see them in July. I truly can’t wait and the van studio has just added to my must see list! I do hope you’ll continue to put out some other local video’s of the Islands and wildlife of the most remarkable islands and how we can support locals have sustainable businesses there. Thank you!

Great video Andrew and what a great idea to reuse the rubbish. Reminds me of the terrible look I had on the shores at Askernish GC in South Uist some years ago. Brilliant, absolutely wonderful (concept, implementation, team and the film about it) oh and Dougal's supervisory skills of course! Love the materials: fantastic re-use of all that plastic + strength from the birch ply (I may have a van boot kitchen and house full of that myself ;-) so I'm biased) and stainless, then lightweight from aluminium, canvas, etc.
