Frost Hammer has been my favorite.
Ashlands is epic. A worthy foe for a Viking, and worthy of the drama.

I would recommend the frostner over the mistwalker, because of the knockback

Yeah...ok people.
You DO NOT want to upgarde any ashlands base weapons that can become gem variants beyond level 1...

It will cost alot of hard to come by resources. And when you switch to the gem variant

(wich is what he should have been using in the test, because no one thinks its a good idea to run plain nidhogg, but it would of gone against his argument had he used a gem nidhogg as example because you have to take their effects into account, wich you should because mistwalker has effects )

Anyway the gem variant gos back to level 1 no matter what level the base weapon was... So dont waste resources

Staff of the Wild is king, not frost staff. I've taken out such large groups with that, just kite around your own vines and watch them wreck everything. It's also fun to throw a giant flaming skeleton troll in the mix to rampage.

Silver arrows work well especially when you sneak attack 'cause both the pierce AND spirit damage is increased by x3. With a decent bow skill and a level 3 or 4 spinesnap, you can one-shot tweakers and marksmen. You can get a warrior down to around half health from a single silver arrow sneak attack. Valkyries will take about 400 damage (a bit more than 25% of their health). Against morgen -- just use the best arrow you have because they're only weak to lightning.

Also, spirit damage stacks so you don't have to worry about wasting ticks by hitting it with another arrow.

Raising skill to 100 will be unreachable for most users, including me, I guess, without cheating. Dying, especially at higher skill levels, hurts and adds to partially lower damage when fighting multiple mobs at the same time which again increases the likelihood of you dying in that process.

Reason that the Mistwalker (and Frostner and Frost Arrows) do not stagger as fast as a weapon doing equal total dmg, is that frost and spirit dmg do not contribute to fill the stagger bar.

Only blunt, slash, pierce and lightning contribute to the stagger bar. That is why the Nidhögg of Thundering imo is the best of the one handed swords. Especially since the 20% chance chain lightning effect also contributes to the stagger bar of all enemies around.

So your "but", arguing that frost dmg makes a weapon better, disregards the fact, that frost does not stagger. Frost is always a tradeoff for staggering capabilities. Thus is is a choice between two effects, that each have their benefits. Frost helps with crowd control, staggering helps with killing faster. So i find non frost weapons, work much better in duels, but frost weapons help more with crowds. Albeit, as soon as you get your hand on one iolite, the non frost weapons get overall more powerful (see below).

Also there is no reason to not carry two weapons, but many for it. It is always good to have a backup, if durability runs out. And if one carries two weapons anyways, you can just have one frost and one stagger weapon, using frost, when a crowd gets too much and stagger, otherwise. And carrying a frost arrow loaded bow, to slow enemies combined with a stagger type melee weapon, worked also well for me.

All that said, by far the most powerful weapon in the Ashlands (and the game so far) are imo the (Thundering) Berserkir axes. Their fast attack rate makes them already very powerful, without Thundering. But with it, the chain lightning effect procs so often, that it gets incredible powerful. And even if you accidentally (or intentionally) hit trees, the chain lightning can proc, hitting enemies in the vicinity.

It is also noteworthy, that faster attacking weapons profit much more from upgrading, since all weapons get the equal 6 (or 5 for most axes) points of dmg per upgrade (I think knives are different, but I don't use them). For the faster weapons, that means a much higher percent increase of their initially lower dmg, and thus a better dps increase. Thus the berserkir axes profit a lot from upgrading and the +10 lightning dmg they get from an iolite gem.

Also since the iolite upgrade already adds 10 dmg and a 20 to 25 chance to extra aoe chain lightning dmg, even tier 1 ones are better than a fully upgraded bare flame metal weapon.

Btw: Frostner and generally one handed club type weapons do not have shorter range of their primary attack, than one handed swords. Both have exactly the same 90° arc of attack and reach of 2.4 meters. Although the knockback might make it feel that way, since you miss combos, because of it. But if you do not combo, they hit exactly the same.
Another effect that might swords seem to have higher reach, is that their primary swing attack suffers no multi-target-dmg-penalty, which makes them much more powerful against groups. I think that was not always so, but came with some update, maybe with Mistlands introducing Krom.

The secondary attack is indeed different, with swords having 2.7 m reach with just 10° arc, that makes it very easy to miss. x3 dmg (x3 stagger).
The clubs offer 2.4 m reach, with a better 30° arc. x2 dmg and x5 stagger. So slightly lower range with three times the arc, means far better chances to hit, if your aim is not perfect.

Also the finding, that Krom kills slower disregards, its higher reach and stagger capabilities, compared to other swords. In that case, the higher reach with its wide swinging arcs, that have no multi-target-dmg-penalty, actually help quite a lot, at keeping enemy groups away and/or staggered.

Other thing ou have to consider is that if you are fightin in a real combat experience in Ashlands its really rare the time you can go hammer on an enemy for 4 seconds straight without needin to dodge or kite something around. This is where the DoT of Mistwalker comes in handy... when you are strikin once, kiting around, strikin again, dodgin and such everytime you are not hittin the enemy at least they are slowed down and receivin damage over time, thus making a faster and easier kill than with the flat Flametal Sword's damage.

No speed test with Frostnr? Charred are also a skeleton that are weak to blunt aren't they? Or is the overall damage too low on it to make up for that?

I find that despite the fire resistance, multiple enemies are STILL best handled using the fireball staff due to it's even split with blunt, causing you to do around 75% of base damage (Still strong).
Also need to consider that after your first stronghold raid you can upgrade your Flametal weapons to the three varients.

The Flametal Mace when upgraded to lightning is really nice too (As is the sword and dual axes) due to the chain lightning effect.
Poison upgrades stop enemies turning when the immobilise procs allowing you to get behind them and relentlessly punish.
The blood upgrade feels garbage tbh.

The whole reason you want the new weapons is not its base stats but the magic infused gems you give them. Do a video on gem infused weapons and you will see the utility can be greater than what the mistwalker and frostner can do. But dont get me wrong they are a must for entering ashlands.

I think the main difference between normal weapons and magic staves in Valheim is the resource they use. Since you need to use stamina for BOTH attacking and dodging (or running) that makes it a little more difficult, you got to take care not to end up exhausted (no stamina) and mobs ready to make your life bar disappear. Meanwhile staves use eitr/mana and that bar charges separately. Thus for mages you use stamina for positioning and eitr for combat, a more safe style. However mage armor is much weaker than warrior's heavy armor, so getting hit, well, hits differently, lol (pun intended).

Wasn’t a magic guy, but I will say magic the only thing keeping me alive in the Ashlands. Had to retire the combat weapons. lol but I also just got the resources to start crafting some of the newer weapons

Staff of the wild's vines get the shield from staff of protection, situational but incredibly useful if utilized properly

I've been able to use the maxed silver sword to complete the Ashlands. It very effective when parrying. But not the best for crowd control

You forgot about Silver Sword from mountains. 93 slash and 45 spirit damage at level 4.

Is there any point to the sneak skill in the Ashlands?
