It should be mentioned, that in 2009, Apple thought about adding support/switching to ZFS, but cancelled this roadmap. Anyway, major features (volumes/~LVM equivalent, snapshotting), of APFS obviously have been taken from there. I guess, they considered ZFS too bloated (RAM usage; just like Btrfs made its way to Linux distros), and they needed to seemlessly integrate their metadata.

Should I format my drive in OS journaled or APFS?

Ext4 and NTFS. Linux and Windows (mostly just gaming). If I come across my old MacBook Pro, I might back it up and throw Linux on it.
