"The Godfather" is a 1972 American crime film directed by "Francis Ford Coppola". Based on Puzo's 1969 novel of the same name, the film stars "Marlon Brando" & "Al Pacino" as the leaders of a powerful New York crime family. The story, spanning the years 1945 to 1955, centers on the transformation of Michael Corleone (Pacino) from reluctant family outsider to ruthless Mafia boss while also chronicling the Corleone family under the patriarch Vito Corleone (Brando).

The Godfather is widely regarded as one of the greatest films in world cinema and as one of the most influential, especially in the gangster genre. Now ranked as the second greatest film in American cinema (behind "Citizen Kane") by the American Film Institute, it was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry in 1990.

Pacino's acting is incredible in this movie. When you look how he was in the beginning of the movie and transitioned to this by the end, it is like he played 3 different characters.

This is not the best scene. The best scene is almost 3 hours long

When the boss says "It insults my intelligence, makes me very angry" in the calmest voice possible, you should be very afraid.

I get chills when Pacino says "That makes me very angry".
Best actor of all time.

Mike's interrogation technique is actually very feasible and practical. He confronts Carlo with his treachery and sits next to him instead of across from him, thus creating a more intimate approach. When Carlo doesn't admit his guilt, Mike undermines any confidence Carlo has by telling him that all the guys supporting him are dead. He offers him kindness by having a drink supplied, and reassures him that Mike has an emotional responsibility to him as his child's godfather. It's unthinkable that he would have Carlo killed.

As Carlo is breaking, Mike gives him his false punishment to reassure Carlo that whilst he will be punished, it will simply be a removal from the business and a pseudo exile, far removed from the death he expected. It's easy for Carlo to buy this, because he fully expects to be punished somehow, so it's a relief to find that out. Mike even shows him the plane tickets to make the illusion real.

The stages of interrogation there are brilliant. Asserting guilt, forming a conspiratorial environment, removal of support, a show of kindness and believable reassurance along with evidence of safety in a lesser punishment, right before having the guy murdered moments later.

Mike Corleone is not someone to fuck with, clearly. :)

You know you’re dead when they act like your best friend! That’s one consistent theme in any mafia movie..

Pacino in this scene is the epitome of great acting because you don't see him acting. He's calm, cool and relaxed.

I read a comment that made me laugh so I'll reproduce it here:"I'm starting to pick up bits of Italian. When an Italian says 'Hello, Carlo.' It means 'Goodbye, Carlo.'"

Poor Clemenza,
He truly loved Sonny like one of his own kids. He was probably very satisfied he got revenge for Sonny.

the lighting on Michael's face as hes staring down Carlo is perfect

"You gotta answer for Santino, Carlo"

... and in the background a crow calls out @0:13 signalling that Carlo's time of reckoning has arrived.

One thing that always sticks out to me in this scene is the fact that Clemenza is the one who kills Carlo. If you recall, Clemenza was Sonny's godfather, so it actually seems pretty fitting that he's the one that kills Carlo in one of the most brutal ways. I mean almost all of the guys here go for the usual shooting option. But Clemenza went for something more prolonged and more personal.

This movie NEVER gets old. I love how they show the three varying degrees of leadership: Vito, old school, tough, but respected; Sonny, the hot head, shoot first, ask questions later;  and Michael, the level headed one who develops a plan before acting.  Absolutely fantastic film making; back when Hollywood knew what it was doing. (unlike today)

Clearly Michael Corleone took interogation lessons from my wife.

The entire film is like a moving Caravaggio painting... deep shadows that melt into blackness, warm glowing skin tones, dramatic highlights. The lighting in every frame is carefully constructed to elicit the most emotional impact. Look at the thumbnails to the right ----> Each still could be a wonderful baroque painting.
