Dell G7 Graphic Designers Review

Talking about the Dell G7 in this video, the question stands, is the Dell G7 a good laptop for graphic design? This is a graphic designer's review of the Dell G7, let's talk about it... ⏩ Grab a link to the laptop below!...

Does the Dell G7 bring enough power and usability to make a great graphic design laptop, and on a medium-sized budget? This is not a cheap laptop by any means but it does fall under the budget category in my perspective?

In this review, I am going to look at four essential aspects of the Dell G7 to test it's ability to stand as a worthy graphic design laptop: Connectivity, Usability, Performance, and Durability.

1. Connectivity

Connectivity is the first aspect I am going to talk about with the Dell G7. It is important to consider the ports available on the side of the laptop when you are making a buying decision. I use the ports on the side of my Dell laptop daily, if not multiple times per day so I find it essential to have the available ports that make my day more productive.

The ports available on the sides of the Dell G7 are HDMI, USB, USB-C, Thunderbolt, SD Card, and Headphone jack. In my opinion, this graphic design laptop contender has everything you need to call itself a suitable fit for designers.

2. Usability

How important is it that you have a laptop that is usable and easy to maneuver from your home to the office, from class to class, or from airport to airport? For some graphic designers and creatives, in general, it is essential to have a lightweight machine that is easy to carry from place to place. The Dell G7 is not a thin laptop in my opinion compared to say the Dell XPS 15 or the MacBook Pro. So if you are looking for an ultra-thin laptop look elsewhere.

The Dell G7 is not a thin laptop, but this could pay off to be a substantial benefit to someone less concerned with weight and size and more concerned with performance. (Coming later in the post)

3. Performance

The Dell G7 has great connectivity, decent usability, but what about its performance. Is this laptop equipped to handle the heavy lifting of programs like Photoshop, After Effects and Premiere Pro?

The Dell G7 comes with 16GB of RAM, 256GB SSD, the 8th Generation i7 Processor, and a GTX 1060 Max-Q Graphic Processing Unit. This computer is not only up to par but supersedes my benchmark for a qualified graphic design laptop. Remember early when I was talking about the Thickness and weight of the Dell G7 being a possible benefit to someone looking for performance over usability. Well, because this laptop is thicker than most laptops featured to graphic designers it allows the powerful GTX 1060 Max-Q Graphics Processing Unit to receive more breathing room. This allows the fans to work with far better efficiency, allowing the laptop to run cooler and faster!

4. Durability

The Dell G7 has a build quality that is a step below the laptops I wholly stand behind. Because most of the high-end laptops offer a mix of metal-alloy or metal-alloy plus carbon fiber this laptop does not quite kick the budget category. But if it was built with Metal and Carbon than you would not have such a great buy on your hands at the price. So, in this case, you have to look at the performance of the machine more than the aesthetics. A soft and durable sleeve plus careful hands will keep this machine protected.

Great work Pal! Excellent video. I too am a VFX pro and had shortlisted the G7 along with the XPS. Mine would involve work plus gaming thrown in. So what do you recommend? Apart from that the G7 can it be color calibrated for a better looking screen? Please suggest mate. Waiting for your feedback. Thanks!

Nice review as always! I have heard that screen brightness is not enough for multimedia/graphics purposes. What is your thought on this please?

Thank you so much! Can you do a review rendering some projects comparing it with the Mac book pro? Or something? You will get a lot more views! Have a nice day!

Hey Ben, nice video! I was curious your thoughts on noise with the G series. I'm an audio engineer--mixing film and also location sound and what not--looking for the quietest laptop that still has these juicy specs. With the gaming comps, it's always hard to find an opinion on that 'middle ground noise.' Everyone's always talking full on AAA game vs. idle. haha. Do these stay pretty quiet while working hard at photoshop or premier? Or do they kick into full cool mode. (I know this is an older model than is out there now, but maybe this is a more general 'gaming computer' for pro applications question if you have experience with others in this respect as well. I noticed you mention the Legion further down. The Y740 seems like a beast. Only snags are battery and massive power brick, which maybe I don't actually care about as it seems to run quietest of the gamers. My macbook pro motherboard died [again], so I'm free to explore other options finally heh)

Going back and forth on this or Alienware 15. Not sure if the price jump to the AW would be worth it though. I'll mainly be editing home footage from my GoPro 7 to share on social media and the occasional web browsing. I don't play video games, so its main function would be video editing. And I don't edit enough(maybe 2 videos a month, MAYBE) to justify Premier Pro or any monthly subscription so I'll be using power director or something very similar. Thoughts? Maybe a suggestion for my uses? Great video and review. Subbed

Hi Ben, how much is the actual difference between the colors on this G7 screen? I am an illustrator too and thinking of this laptop. I am using cintiq 13hd for my works and thought here would be a problem in the colors on these 2 screens. Your thoughts? Please reply.

Don't forget the serviceability, the parts catalogue. That's why me personally only use Dell or HP products. Because of spare parts availability.
Recently, with part id, I identified the compatible keyboard replacement for 5 years HP Pavilion dv6-7000 series. No longer under HP warranty, but I can fix small issue myself, because spare-parts still available.

aAaaAaaHhh, I’ve been having doubts about getting this laptop for graphic design (because most reviews said the screen is not good in terms of color accuracy and brightness) but since you reviewed it, I’m going to get this one. Thanks!

If I buy a Dell G7 128 GB SSD can I upgrade it to 256 GB SSD as the latter is out of my budget? Also how much will it cost?
