What IS a Lute?

The European Lute is a beautiful, gourd-shaped instrument, which inherited its characteristics chiefly from the Arabic Oud. There are dozens of sub-varieties spanning different locales and time periods across Europe, but the most iconic one at this point is the classic, 6-course Renaissance Lute, which saw popular usage all over during the late 16th century.

Thanks for posting. I'm listening to a book that mentions a lute and I wasn't sure if it was a like a guitar or like a harp.
