Praying mantises are cool bugs! In fact, Chris & Martin should make a new episode of Wild Kratts Season 7 about cicadas soon! What do you think, Big Bruce! *Big Bruce the coconut crab, cracking coconuts* 🥥 🦀

I get chills thinking about the fact that there are between 1, 800 and 2, 500 species of praying mantises in the world.

So my husky pup love sticks and found an ootheca attached to a stick😮 she managed to find it in 4 feet of snow this past winter. So I hung it and it hatched. I originally thought it was a butterfly cocoon, but after doing a Google search realize I had an ootheca😊 I strapped it to the trellis where my Scarlet runner beans used to be because that is where Last Summer I had found a huge Female green MANTIS 🤭 not knowing this year it would become my addiction😂side note: I would have NEVER touch a full-grown praying mantis then..😅)So I think they actually ended up hatched slowly cuz I had many different sizes and colours from Brown's to Greens & sizes from baby cricket size to small grasshopper sizes🤔🤷🏼‍♀️(sorry no other way to describe their sizes such a variety...) So at first I found 6 and then I found 8 total 😁 after finding eat in one day and seeing them all at once knowing they were different and doctor was eight bed moved a lot and couldn't keep up after That Day😢Ended up losing some in the yard finding their casings from moltings but I think a lot of them moved on died or are hiding very well in my hostas which are shady tons of bugs and humongous😊 and now it's end of July now & laughs because I lost the 1/2 MANTIS two days ago (I call it a half because he's just missing I don't think he's dead we're gone away he's just hiding very well so he's a half a mantis) so the one I have seen and been hanging with daily for the past few days I believe is a female, thats because all the other ones are still smaller than her and from what I've read the females are always bigger! Also found many many ladybugs in the yard in the pool I found eight baby ones one day all at the same time❤(I should have a ton of luck at this point says the INTERNET😂) but I things are all around because of the abundance of aphids on almost all my plants. like I've never seen in all my years of gardening but now that the praying mantises and ladybugs are older and active a bit they've taken care of business..😂😂 I figured if I start handling them while they're small it won't be scared when full grown😅😅so now that, that part of the backstory out of the way my question is, I only have one large MANTIS I believe to be a female🤔 because she is the biggest out of all the ones I've seen so far but having that one the other day charge at her as though she was prey leads me to believe the smaller one was probably the female because females are more aggressive hence making this one I think is a female an actual male, but then why is she so big compared to rest of them🤔 she's between newborn and an adults size(like right in the middle half the size of an adult I think, cuz now I know what both sizes look like cuz of that you think I've seen babies and I've seen an adult last summer😅 what I need to know how to count those belly stripes? And she doesn't even have her wing buds I know not all female mantid species fly either but I'm sure these mantids in my area do or just have partial flight😊 they say you can count the abdomen lines in the female has more but they've been so small for so long I can't really see them yet and now I don't have a second one out of the eight that I found hatched cuz she's the one that stuck around or lived I love my neighbor's backyard so fenced-in but can join and we all have gardens so I'm sure a lot went on their way cuz this year I planted my veggies late cuz of all the rain we got and are still getting and it's been hard to find good quality veggies in my area so this year they're not as tall and bushy as they were previous years the reason they stuck around last yr at all had the Scarlet runner beans first year was last year my daughter's teacher had given them these beans I actually still have a ton in my freezer but didn't think that my dog would find that stick with ootheca. So when I rip down to the dried-up scarlet branches never knew anything about praying mantis until this winter and since they hatched I'm obsessed literally I have so many videos of them eating and hanging out and you name it I have it recorded😂😂 they are the most interesting and cutest bugs ever even more than bees cuz beazer cut-and-dry and you can't raise them😂 I will not be taking her out of her habitats which is my garden but she got an injury I think from falling and I've been handling her she's babying one arm I can see a slight discolouration spot on her one front mandible😢I think that's what they are called😂 I'm actually looking at it right now and I've never actually seen her sleeping but I just read about it cuz there's always more to learn about these bugs Persephone name she is larger than other one I saw but that's normal for the ones in my yard to be different sizes so that does not tell me if she's a female or male but few days back I had found a second one on my back wall by my potted flowers and side-by-side the small one attacked her (pretending she's the female cuz she's larger) but doesn't mean she's a female because of the facts I stated above (they were born all different sizes 🤔 it's so perplexing there could be another around for all I know and I just didn't see it but that is highly unlikely because I'm very perfect when it comes to weeding I'm taking care of my yard and garden I know this is a long message but if you're interested in praying mantises you may find this comment interesting as well so like I said I think I found her sleeping she has her head down to her praying hands never thought to look for her sleeping they didn't realize how important it is for them too sleep or that they slept at all 😆 is there any other way to tell a male from a female at this age "she's" at? Or am I just going to have to wait until she's full grown to know for sure and even then if I have nothing to compare it to how do I tell maybe the belly lines will be more prominent by then I may have to put her in a terrarium, fall because in Ontario Canada it gets cold in the fall & if they can live up to a year and she's only 2-3 months old maximum than she can meet outside it's one of these neighbourhood MALE MANTIS & I'll bring her in in the fall and hope she's pregnant so she can build Ootheca in a terrarium indoors and hopefully keep her alive/happy as long as posible😊 I just realized something..IF they can go from my garden to the neighbours then maybe her being larger is cuz she's come from a ootheca from my neighbor's yard😊🤷🏼‍♀️ not sure why I just thought of THAT, especially cuz they can fly & walk, jump find between fence it just reminded me of why I would never buy certain insects for outside/yard off of the internet, cuz they can just GO AWAY as soon as I buy them😅😅 but they still sell them🤨 a lot of people don't think of THAT when purchasing beneficial insects for their yard or garden online😂😂 also I keep finding insects that I've take photos up and Google searched that are supposed to be native to Europe Asia amongst other places in the world not native to Canada crumpy's to tiny insects aphids Etc have all made their way here and have become invasive and hard to get rid of like the Japanese beetle for example but one great thing praying mantis are the best even for the cucumber beetle learning I had a praying mantis and also noticing the cucumber beetles last year we're slim-to-none I just assumed planting all my mellons cucumbers, squash, zucchinis later in the season with what was keeping the cucumber beetles away because they already found a home in the neighbor's yard but again there flying bugs and I would find one every once in awhile and my praying mantis were taking care of business come to find out❤❤❤❤ they're so cute and I'm literally obsessed to the point that I want to order them have as pets but I don't feel like it's fair if I don't have a purpose for their lives to be full happy, & wholesome just be selfish of me at that point😢 cuz I go big or go home and I wouldn't want just one I'd want many they're all the same insect but very different personalities I've learned for example two of the praying mantis remembered me and would climb on my hand even being the baby's they are and after molting some of them acted like I was a stranger/predator all over again whereas this last one has continued to Moulton different plants I found the molding stuck around and lets me hold her all the time, anytime ♥️😜😁

I made a friend with a praying mantis once. I held out my hand and she just kind of held my hand for a second to test me out, then ran up my arm and perched herself on my shoulder. She didn't want to leave 😅

You know speaking of bugs. Martin and Chris should have done Katydids in season 1, Weevil, Wasps, Sonoran Desert Black Beetles, and Scorpions in season 2, Crickets in Season 3, and i know not a bug but a Spanish slug in season 4, and Mouse Spiders and Achilles Morpho butterflies in season 6. What do you think fire bite, fire bite the fire ant wiggles his antenna
