This interactive map serves as a blueprint for fighting the climate crisis and biodiversity loss.

The Global Safety Net is an interactive map that shows us the areas we need to focus on to fight climate change and biodiversity loss.

'The idea here is to have this blueprint to start a big discussion,' explains researcher Manno Andrade França.

The system of maps estimates the amount of land that needs to be protected so that carbon dioxide can be absorbed from the atmosphere. It also calls for the restoration of land and ecosystems damaged by humans.

The Global Safety Net focuses on land inhabited by rare species, large mammals, high biodiversity, as well as intact wilderness areas.

'We are in the face of possibly the biggest crisis that we have ever faced.'

I'm an indigenous person in North America. I was quite young the first time I participated in a save our environment event in 1967.
I can close my eyes and experience the sights, sounds, textures, and emotion of that day as vividly as if it were now.
My elders sounded the alarm loud as coyotes. Much of their concerns were called untested hypothesis by the men of academia. Our leaders listened to them.
Even though today many of those concerns are now history those who favour profit over making our earth mother a healthier home are still winning.
Wonderful young people like Greta Thunberg have sounded the alarm for over 50 years now!
Making people aware of the consequences of environmental damage to our Earth Mother is not enough. The leaders simply make people more afraid of the effort needed to heal our world to continue making profits.
My suggestion is that we have the ability to improve our environment in ways that far exceed mitigation of the impending environmental disaster!
We are vision people. When we hold a vision in our mind it becomes reality. We have a space station, and a sealed bio dome. Surly we have done research into what is the best mixture of gases for human beings to thrive in!
What if we shift our vision away from :
What do we need to do to survive?"
To :
"Let us decide what is the best atmosphere for you and I to thrive in and make choices to make earth's atmosphere optimal for life!"
Even though it will take a good long time we can improve.
I planted a walnut 53 years ago when I was 4 years old. Today I am writing this comment sitting in the shade of a mighty walnut tree.

Is it feasible? Does it matter if it is feasible, the alternative is not a pretty picture. So we have to do it no matter how difficult it is.

It's odd to me that we ignore the impact we have on the oceans vegetation which is responsible for much more CO2 consumption than the land vegetation. If we continue to destroy the ocean vegetation, it doesn't matter how many trees we have on the land, it won't be anywhere close to enough.

if the desert is watered by sea water, continuing to plant mangrove trees can grow in the desert. I hope there is this research

I think it underestimated the importance of protecting forests across the southern USA. Not much of the USA was covered. 🤔

A lot can be achieved by ppl actively taking part of their environment And food production. Clear and clean water and covering the soil. Get grazers and chickens.

I have zero confidence in humans taking proper measures to ensure survival of our habitation. We are circling the drain.

Nuclear energy + all other forms of renewables. Seriously, we're on like what? Gen III segue to gen IV reactors? Can we start doing those more?

There has to be repercussions to countries destroying the environment. Brazil is committing a crime against humanity by destroying the Amazon. What repercussions will they face? Currently, nothing. We all suffer for their crimes.
