What I've recently discovered is to go back over my "practice" shapes and lines, and try to make a small doodle out of each; just enough to convey the point. if the shape isn't really telling me what it is (For example, I have a *lot* of lemons and apples for my bad circles), I make it into a rock and try different forms of shading on each facet of the rock I divide it up into.
