Peak for me: Mike’s story of his father’s lesson on the value of small bits of gratitude. As an Enneagram 5, the life of the mind can be an idol to me. And having watched my mom decline from Alzheimer’s and die at age 72, I have tried to push away anything that has to do with the disease through healthy living and challenging work and pastimes. Mike’s dad’s life, in contrast, tells me to pull toward me something of his soul that, while having lost connection to many functions of his brain, is in touch with the gifts of God in the present moment, in the present place. Alzheimer’s is still a specter to me, but I can embrace the practice of small bits of gratitude as a buffer to fear and a salutary practice for today. Thanks for sharing Mike’s good word.

Before I go to bed in the evening, I have a prayer of gratitude. Thanking the Lord for the events that has taken place and the many people that he has brought into my life. (every evening is different).
