Statue of Unity

Do you want to know more about the remarkable Statue of Unity? Is it the tallest statue in the world? Do you want to know more about its size, unique features, and location?

The Statue of Unity is a memorial to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the leader of the Indian Independence Movement. The monument is the world's tallest statue, standing at 182 meters (approximately 597 feet). It was unveiled on October 31, 2018, at a spectacular event commemorating Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel's birth anniversary.

The statue lies on a river island named Sadhu Bet near Rajpipla in Gujarat, 3.2 kilometers away from the Narmada Dam. The monument and its environs cover about 20,000 square meters and are encircled by a 12-square-kilometer artificial lake. Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the project on October 31, 2013.

Interestingly, the unique project required around 135 metric tonnes of iron, which the locals across India donated. The Statue of Unity was built in a record span of 33 months, making it an engineering marvel. Larsen & Toubro Ltd constructed it for Rs 2,989 crore.

Furthermore, the Statue of Unity exterior is made up of 1,700 tons of bronze and 1,850 tons of bronze cladding. In contrast, the interior consists of concrete cement of about 180,000 cubic meters, reinforced steel weighing 18,500 tons, and structural steel.

On the eve of his tenth year as Gujarat's chief minister, Narendra Modi unveiled the initiative on October 7, 2013. Gujarat's Chief Minister chaired the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Rashtriya Ekta Trust (SVT).

The Statue of Unity Movement began to collect the iron required for the statue in 2013 by inviting farmers to donate their old farming tools.
By 2016, 135 metric tonnes of scrap iron had been collected, with roughly 109 tonnes of metal being utilized to construct the statue's foundation after processing. In support of the effort, a marathon called Run For Unity was held on December 15, 2013, in Surat and Vadodara.
