Why Family Guy Is So Hated

Family Guy is a weird case of a show that's still pretty popular but also hated. It's not Big Bang levels of hated but still. It's a pretty easy show to clown on. Why? Let's get into it.

There was nothing ever inherently wrong with the family guy formula, but at some point, evolution of their comedy became necessary. Unfortunately for the creators and viewers, I think the family guy style of humor is not something easily built upon. You can try to strengthen storylines and create more meaningful moments all you want but at the end of the day you're still relying on a very inflexible approach to their humor

One of the first things Bart said was "I'm Bart Simpson. Who the hell are you?", To his own father no less. That must have been crazy to people at the time.

The Simpsons is about funny people who are occasionally horrible.

Family Guy is about horrible people who are occasionally funny.

There’s no way people are complaining about family guy being inappropriate when South Park is literally the most out of line over all these shows, I can’t even stomach South Park sometimes

Two reasons I like older family Guy way better is bc Peter and Lois weren't so terrible as parents, Peter actually kinda cared Abt his wife and children and was somewhat a better friend the same goes to Lois she actually cared Abt her family and friends and tried to be a decent person and the cutaways were actually kinda funny compared to now and more of the humor was actually funny and well thought out...other then that Modern Family Guy is just a hollow shell of it's former self and became a boring show that has no heart anymore and a one dimensional show with no good morals or anything, Modern Simpsons, American Dad and Bob's burgers are better

Slowly the show just developed a system they knew would get people to watch and laugh it’s not their fault that the audience now has either matured past them or just moved on

I remember one time someone commented on another video that they feel like one of the signs that signified Family Guy's lowest downfall was when Quagmire and Brian more or less swapped personalities.

A basic Family Guy episode:
-Peter finds something that he loves and abrasivly shoves that thing in everyone's face.
-Another things starts happening because of the former point.
-Peter is nasty as despicable to everyone around him because of that last thing
-Peter regrets what he did, everyone forgives him, all goes back to normal
-Someone farts on Meg's face

The end

I feel like Family Guy has faded in quality because it just made every character so unlikable. In the early seasons, Peter was an idiot. But he wasn't malicious. Lois was kind of flat. But she wasn't so easy to hate. But in later seasons, it's like every character has lost any redeeming values they once had. It's not like It's Always Sunny, which never attempted to make their characters likable in the first place. At least the Simpsons try to maintain a balancing act between their characters being likable and being a jerk. But Family Guy just doesn't seem to be trying anymore and it really shows.

I think another major factor in why Family Guy is hated is also it’s lack of constancy. Particularly, when it comes to its characters. The characters in family guy flip flop in personality all the time depending on what jokes or stories the writers want to do. One minute, Peter is the archetype sitcom dad who’s bumbling and incompetent, but has a good heart and cares about his family, the next he’s basically a remorseless jerk who doesn’t care for his friends or even his own family. Brian griffin is sometimes the voice of reason straight man to everyone’s insanity one moment and then the next he’s a pretentious, self satisfied jerk. Lois is a caring mom and level head to Peter’s shenanigans, the next she’s a lustful, violent and petty woman who’s abusive to her children. And I don’t even think the writers ever bothered to give Chris a personality outside of being a dumb, naïve teenager. In any great comedy, especially situational comedy, the humour should start with the characters themselves and how they would react in a situation. If the characters are just being used as empty shells for the writers to reel what ever jokes they want regardless of which characters is telling them, that’s just bad comedy writing.

Honestly I haven't watched Family Guy in a while but thought to jump back in with the last season that just went by (season 20), and I genuinely believe there's been a jump up in quality just between season 19 and 20. The cutaways are less obtrusive, the jokes didn't feel crass or lowest-common-denominator. Not every episode was a banger, but I got the feeling the writers finally decided to shake up the formula a bit and I'd like to see more of that going forward.

My MAIN problem with Family Guy is that the stories have really gone bad. I remember this episode where Chris has an anger problem and it turns out that it's just being used as an introduction to another story. Also, the cut-aways before do make sense because, first, it's nostalgic, and second, it's what you'd think what would happen if that scenario actually happen. But the cut-aways now is just random things being thrown in together, nothing makes sense.

I have no problem with the offensive humor or the Dark jokes. I think that should be allowed in this medium. My problem is that they are always trying to make every situation into a joke. Like having the most jokes per episode will make it better somehow. I get that it is a comedy, but sometimes jokes pack harder of a punch when there is some breathe time and some real moments in between to supplement the comedy.

The first 3 seasons of Family Guy were actually brilliant …super well written

This newest season has been more family oriented and I really like it. The kids and Peter have been getting along. Meg has been treated like everyone else and has even gotten her props. I’ve actually felt some sympathy for Peter. And Peter and Lois are actually acknowledging their failing marriage in more than one episode. Their dynamic isn’t as evil anymore

I have a theory that Seth MacFarlene is purposefully trying to sink Family Guy. He's said he wants it to end so he can focus on other projects but because its still successful the network keeps it around. so I wonder if he's trying to sabotage it. And its funny that American Dad is so much better, because I've heard its his one project he actually has the least direct involvement right now.

American dad essentially never uses cutaways. And in the extreme rare times they do, the cutaway is actually about the episodes storyline.

American dad is a million times better than family guy, personally.
