NLT is an excellent thought for thought TRANSLATION.
It's about communicating the meaning behind the words not the words themselves.
No translation is perfect but NLT is accurate and really the most underrated Bible translation.

Another GREAT presentation! I especially liked your recommendation to study several different translations. There are parallel bibles that do just this, although they are somewhat hard to find in "Brick and mortar" stores. I have one that compares the KJV, Amplified, NASB, and NIV. For my purposes, this is most useful. I learned with the KJV, and find it useful for finding references since the English term used is often the same over similar topics due to the not exactly "word for word", but more "thought to thought" misinterpretations therein. I believe the translators were trying to put out a version fit for the masses, who were probably less familiar with the overall text of any scripture! Of course the absolute BEST way to read the scripture is to learn all the original languages and read the original scrolls: to cut out the translators altogether. This is obviously not practical for most people, due to a lack of time and money; I certainly have not had enough of either! And that is why I so thoroughly enjoy your teachings! I like studying the Greek OT with the Hebrew OT. By doing this I understand the NT better because I can compare Jewish and Greek . By doing this I can find Jewish understanding of the Greek NT.

You might want to check the ASV's rendering of MT 23:38 where they have a textual note at the bottom of the page that says "some ancient texts omit "desolate." Virtually all modern translation include it without a note . But these older pre-Scofield translators thought it important for the reader to know that in that verse. Even the NASB95 doesn't have it. Also in 2Pet 3:12, the ASV translators put a note on the Greek word translated "coming" there as "presence." Those pre-Scofield guys were wonderful!!

I was hoping for more messianic/sacred names bibles on the scale of thought for thought vs word for word. what about the scriptures by isr and rsb by yrm how about holy names bible by sra?

also what do you think about the fact that no messianic/sacred names editions are based off the critical text?

Currently, my favorite Messianic Bible version is the NJV translated by Hineni Publishers. I should get an MJLT and compare the two 👍

Even with all the Bibles we have, we don't read/heed what is written, so what does it matter if they are correctly translated? The biggest problem is when the translators changed names (that never should be changed). Acts 4:12 decalres there is but ONE NAME, and that name was never "Jesus".

As far as the Old testament goes, the ESV used both texts in the production of their OT text. I believe it is superior. As for the New Testament, I believe the 1901 American Standard Version is the best.
