Fire and water: mortal enemies? Not so fast! Here are 5 ways to start a fire, using water.

I figured out how to make fire and water work together. My friends at Volkswagen, who made this video possible, figured out a way to make a German-engineered car, that's a blast to drive, also a smart choice.

Some quick links to a few of the materials I used:

WARNING:

Under certain conditions, an open flame can grow to an uncontrollable, blazing fire. This may result in serious injury, burns, property damage, forrest fires, grass fires, and even death. Use of video content is at own risk.

Projects & pictures that inspired this video:

#1: Original idea adaptation after experimenting with water bottles
#4: Original idea adaptation from experimenting with water bottles, and looking for a bottle shaped like a sphere. The POM bottles are perfect!

Project History & More Info:

In this video you'll see how to;

- Start a fire using an old light bulb and water
- Get tinder smoldering using plastic wrap and water
- Make a hands free liquid lens with a picture frame and plastic wrap
- Ignite tinder using a water bottle
- Start a blazing fire by reacting water and sodium

I love the idea that simple resources can be utilized to help meet our basic survival needs. Water is about as basic and abundant as it gets. To use it as a liquid lens you just need to find a way to make it round, clear, and hope for a sunny day! Then, your imagination is the only limitation. :)

The problem with this is... Really, this only shows two ways to start a fire with water.
1. Create a lens by using water and a clear substance to focus light on the tinder.
2. Mix water and sodium to cause an explosive exothermic reaction.

Wow! That's amazing! This information is very useful, especially if you are stranded or lost and need a fire! Good work and keep it up!

I only count two ways. "Use it to make a lens" "react it with elemental sodium."
2/5 would not pretend 1 = 4 again.

I'm out in the wilderness and I was able to find a lightbulb, a picture frame, plastic wrap, and a spherical water bottle. But, I can't find water! How do I start a fire without water with all these other things?

CAUTION - Just a handful of sodium and enough water can create a HUGE explosion! I know - a friend of mine use to steal pure sodium from his parents who were chemist/lab workers. We would fill up a sandwich bag with it and put it in a jar and close the top. We would then throw it out into the river and start throwing rocks at it. Once we hit it and broke the jar we would run like mad for cover. In about 15-30 seconds there would be a huge explosion, as loud as a civil war cannon and you could actually feel the blast (I'm not kidding). Judging from the noise level, I would guess that If you had had it in your hand it might of blown it off. I'm surprised that they only offer an average bit of caution here about it - it's extremely dangerous to work with it around water.
