Thank you, Victoria! I've been unconsciously copying every song's original singer, partly because I was too scared to find out that my "own" voice sucks, partly because some people even told me that that's a great way to practice. After quite a while, mythroat got tighter and tigher as you mentioned, and I finally understood why. Now I'm working on being more and more comfortable singing "like me", no matter how it sounds, because it doesn't seem worth it to copy. It's reassuring to know that even professionals like you went through this :D So thank you! I'd advise anyone to not get too far into copying, as it becomes a muscle memory that's harder to fix.

Victoria, I wish I could take private lessons from you. You know everything about voice and you help us beginners to move in the right direction.

I believe this advance goes beyond just singing. I hear it in my own voice when speaking normally, I sound like a phony when I'm being a phony. However, my natural voice (my singing voice too, because I can hold a note!) sounds so hard and mean sometimes, so I try to meet others expectations, if that makes sense.

I had people who aren’t even professional musicians try to tell me to sing like the original or it’s not good Enough. Luckily I sing like myself

Thanks Victoria! I’m a new singer and I’ve been binge watching (and loving) all your videos. I have a question: how do you know if you’ve found a good teacher? I had my first singing lesson yesterday and I suddenly realized that I had no idea how to tell. I thought “what if I get terrible advice and ruin my voice!?” “What if I don’t make any progress!?”. The anxiety put a bit of a damper on my excitement.

Amen...thank you for your transparency which encourages me to always be authentic. Can you tell me how some people's voice shakes when they are singing especially high notes for a longer period of time, including yours...that's the only way I can describe it. My voice does not do that & I wish I could, but maybe i can't because I'm a beginner. Do you have a video on that which explains why & how that happens & how I can one day do that with my voice? Thank you & God bless your beautiful voice 🙏🏿

When she said she used to emulate Whitney Houston and asked, "and you know what that got me, " I immediately sang, "nothing, nothing, nothing!" 🤣

I think a little bit of copying is necessary. As you start out you will look at other artists you share similarities with and emulate them a little. Perfectly normal. Kinda like babies learning to talk. They spew gibberish trying to copy the adults.

I think what is bad, however, is *staying* in that place. It’s fine in the beginning but only to get your feet off the ground. Afterwards you kinda have to start talking to yourself. What music do you genuinely like? What excites you? Where do you feel your voice is the best? Then slowly you’ll forge an identity of your own. And FYI it will never be 💯 unique. There is like 8 billion people on this planet. Some overlap is understandable.
