German here.
The rental misery we have now doesn´t come out of the blue.
For years, if not decades not enough apartments were built, mostly because of regulation (tight development plans, compensation areas, no conversion of farmland to building land, absurd high requirements for energy consumption and insulation).
On top of that Europe suffered from the effects of mass immigration. The bad thing about this topic is how solidarity ended at the railroad station when they arrived inside our borders. There were no extra apartments builds for the millions of refugees came to us. It´s not exactly their fault, they just wanted to escape from unbelievable misery. Ironically, all these low-income students, who greeted them when they came are most affected of apartment scarcity.

If you have high migration but do not build housing, you have a huge problem.

Houses are not a market. They are not a bank in which to invest long-term savings. They are not a casino in which to speculate. Houses are homes.

Because they panic when the "cost of living" starts falling, and rush to print money.
"Cost of LIVING". Awful world.

like entire countries took leave from work to stay home during Covid crisis, all big cities where housing is unaffordable should take similar leave from all other activities - to move biggest employers out of the city so that they vacate the spaces, provide all necessary manpower to house builders so that more housing is built - then this housing crisis can be solved in just one year.. all it needs is a strong will

Why would people risk their lives to find freedom,
but never thought of going to a country like China 🇨🇳?

WTF is this lady doing to her voice while narrating this? She speeds up, slows down at predictably unsettling times no matter what's to be read.
