Turkey's housing market in crisis: Tenants and property owners clash over skyrocketing prices

Turkey’s housing market has reached a crisis point, with the two largest cities, Istanbul and Ankara, witnessing the world’s fastest house price growth over the past year. Rents have surged six-fold in the last four years, creating an untenable situation for many. The soaring costs have led to violent confrontations between landlords and tenants, resulting in 11 deaths and 46 injuries last year. The situation remains dire, with little relief in sight for those struggling to afford housing in a rapidly escalating market.

Al Jazeera’s Sinem Koseoglu reports from Istanbul.

It seems housing globally is out of control, UK, Canada, US, Australia- many more. What is going on?

Same problems in UK, Canada and Germany... what kind of people are coming in large number in these countries?

I really can't stand the focus on Istanbul. The renting crisis is in the smaller cities, too where there are no foreign buyers.

Housing is _NOT_ an entitlement. Access to housing is an entitlement.

This is what happens when voting in wrong people.

High prices are not attributable to foreign buyers. It is simplistic to point fingers at foreigners, which diverts attention from the actual causes.
The true culprits of this distress are high inflation and, primarily, the avarice of construction firms.

My only question is, are those buildings earthquake resistant 🤔

Is it safe to build that high in Istanbul Turkey given its very concentrated area of earthquake!?

Why not mentioning that the real inflation is more than %100 when saying rental prices went up %65?

This is what happens when you involve your country into an interest based system. Interesting how no one can go after the central banks.

The way out for Türkiye is, to create opportunities outside the 3 major cities.
There needs to be more investment into rail and digital infrastructure.
If people can find proper work, in medium sized cities, they don’t have to move to, Istanbul, Izmir or Ankara.

It's even worse here in London, but still people from poor countries think it's ok to come here by whatever means necessary and expect that free accommodation is readily available to them. It is NOT. I have a small one bed apartment in London. Estate agents recently said I can rent it out for £2, 100 per month, plus bills.that's about £2, 600 a month. Let that sink in before you think you can come and live in London. You won't be able to live 🤷😟
