Blender 2.8 Texturing with Layers like Substance Painter

Here is a new #Blender 2.8 texturing video tutorial with PBR texturing and using layers like you know it perhaps from Substance Painter for texture painting.

I use the following textures from this page for free:

like I did in the previous Blender texturing video.

Now I add a second Principled shader BSDF node to the shader editor and use a black image as a mask with the Mix Shader node.

Then i paint onto the mask with a white color take make the underlaying shader and textures visible at these areas.

Great work jayanam, this is definitely still one of blender's weak-points.

This makes texturing 1000 times easier!

Excellent tutorial, as always! Users are still discovering how powerful Blender really is for being a fully-featured completely free software. Thanks for showing new users the potential it has!

The mix nodes are nice, but one thing I think Blender could use really use would be a "Layers" node where you can plug a load of shaders in one end, arrange the order they're applied in from top to bottom and what mixing mode and opacity is applied when they're stacked up. I know that it would basically be functionally equivalent to multiple chained mix nodes but that method gets really messy really quickly. Plus it'd be more intuitive for those of us coming from a 2D background where we're already used to the layers workflow.

Thank you very much, I was struggling trying mix 2 textures at the same time!

Bruh! You explained the logic very well, i finally understood how mask works in blender. Thank you!!!

If you're working with cycles and trying to paint on the mask when your 3D viewport is set to render, switch to viewport shading. cycles doesn't refresh textures when you edit/save them so your changes wont show in real time

I always look for Substance Painter alternatives. This tutorial helps me get to that and best way to create PBR textures to be used with Blender.

Pretty solid tutorial, thank you for not going on tangents or dragging time

Awesome Jayanam! Thank you. This will help with texturing things for Unreal.

I'd still like the ability to use one brush stroke to paint into multiple different types of image textures with multiple different types of brush textures. Example: a height map brush stroke that is perfectly aligned with an albedo brush stroke, along with metallic, specular, and roughness brush strokes, all together to create a cohesive material brush stroke.

I get the feeling that Blender will never have this feature without add-ons, because the niche Blender fills best in the software ecosystem is 3D modeling, so that's where all the developers' love goes. I'll just have to hope that ArmourPaint development goes well.

I did the same but slightely another way. I groped the bunch of texture nodes and mix shaders togather and set input colors and mix factor as input interfaces of this group and resulting mixed colors as output interfaces. Then I connected such groups consistently with applayed mask textures. However your approach looks more simple and flexible. Sorry for my curve English))

This is great! I've been using Substance painter but it's getting expensive. Between Blender and the related Armor Paint (when it's out of beta), I'll be able to get along without it.

Fantastic tutorial, one of the best I have seen so far, thank you, this is helping me a lot on my projects.👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

Cheers. I recently started using Blender instead of Maya LT as it does not support my 3D mouse. Blender 2.8 is nice update. The older UI was hard to get to grips a year ago when I was also learning to use 3D packages.

subscribed, liked, pushed the bell and moved it to the re-watch videos. This is amazing.

Tip: If you just want a new color layer, you can mix base color with a new color in MixRGB node instead of mixing whole new shader.
