Growing up in the 80's there was a D-Day veteran living on our road. He had his left leg from the knee down amputated. We use to do odd jobs for him like mow & rake leaves & we always use to ask to see his medals or tells us stories which he never showed or told us. Some years after he passed away, I spoke to his daughter who told us because he was injured & back in England within a few days without firing his gun that he felt ashamed. Definition of ashamed is embarrassed or guilty because of ones actions, characteristics or associations. Saddens me that he felt that.

I have deep sympathy for the old woman and that her father was killed there on D - Day. My grandpa was a simple soldier in the German Wehrmacht and my grandma had been waiting for her young husband to return from WWII. Then she got the sad news that he died in Stalingrad ( Russia) . Unfortunately, we don`t know where he was buried in Stalingrad to say goodbye to him.RIP to all soldiers no matter which nation was killed in the war.🙏💞😔

I visited the Normandy beaches for the 50th anniversary. I was just a high school student then.

Will they also remember VJ day with the same gravitas? My grandfather spent five years in the jungles of Burma. Its just as important.

This was so beautiful and humbling to watch. The singers brought tears to my eyes, their music was stunning. Saying ' thank you' to all those brave, wherever they were or still are...will never, ever be enough.❤️. Never forgotten.

As a British Army veteran I am conscious that it is merely a matter of fate, timing and in some cases geography as to who were called upon to carry out this task. I could have been there, you could have been there and our loved ones could have been there. Would we have been so brave? Would we have carried out the task so well? I often wonder. Thank you to the BBC for marking this day with dignity.

“At this historic moment surely not one of us is too busy, too young or too old to play a part in a nation-wide, perchance a world-wide vigil of prayer as the great crusade sets forth." - King George VI, speaking during a radio address on June 6, 1944

My father and grandfather took part in D-Day, both serving on the Polish cruiser, the ORP Dragon, which shelled Sword beach on D-Day. On 7 July 1944 the ship was hit by a German manned torpedo while it was off Caen, 26 men were lost. On 20 July she was scuttled to form part of the artificial breakwater near Courseulles.

It is seldom that one sees a professional reporter tearing up from a commemoration, but I have nothing but respect for him.

I am in aw of the soldiers own written speeches read out by others, these men and women the likes we will never see again, disappointing though to see a seated young lady in uniform, head down appearing to be on her phone, says it all really, to see the names on the wall behind our king makes it all so heartbreaking and yet on the news israel has hit a school, russia still at war, no lessons learnt. My uncle parachuted in to the black forest and all he said was i pray to god no one will have to see what we saw, never said any more on the story, but thank these service men for their bravery and service, past and present god bless you all ❤❤❤

Never forget the contributions of the US, the USSR, the British Empire, the ROC, and French Empire to liberate us of fascist tyranny and suffering.
