Clean Fuel Filler Door Seal and Filler Neck for All Capless Filler Neck Equipped Cars and Trucks

Learn Why and How to clean your Fuel Filler Door Seal and Filler Neck of your Capless Filler Neck equipped car or light truck. The Ford Motor Company has been using a Capless Filler Neck for a few years now. If you have vehicle with the Capless Filler Neck you need to periodically clean the Door Seal and the Filler Neck to both prevent dirt from entering the Fuel Tank and to ensure both sealing surfaces are clean. Cleaning the sealing surfaces will also ensure your vehicle does not have an EGR or other fault in the future. This is easy to do, but is more involved than wiping down the outside of the Filler Neck. I perform my cleaning on a 2013 Ford Mustang GT, but this also works on many, many cars and light trucks.

Just a quick note about the video - -

You have to open the Flapper Valve (the little automatic door) and clean the mating surface. This video shows you how.
Cleaning the outside is good, but the point of this video is to clean that inside valve that make a vacuum seal to prevent OBDII fault codes! I hope this is helpful - Stiles

Never thought about cleaning that area. Seems like a good idea. Thanks for the tip.

Sir, thank you so much for posting this awesome video. Our 16 Jeep Grand Cherokee is throwing evap codes and this is the cheapest way to start my hunt for what may be causing them. Hopefully it's just dirty and a good cleaning will help.❤

So, you think a gas cap is redundant but this hastle of cleaning isnt' a bigger pain in the ass? And engineer that came up with this idea should be fired on the spot!

I will stay with a cap. Nothing to stop anyone from putting something in the tank.

That is dumb watch scotty kilmer on this subject...what would it cost to replace that dumb valve...what would it take for some idiot to mess up your fuel. Heard they even are dangerouse for gas explossions? Put it this way, , , look at all the youtubes on this subject . Think...a gas cap...really

I was having trouble with the gas pump shutting off after getting less than a gallon of gas into the tank. Tried cleaning up the filler neck like you suggested but without using Armor All or WD40. I just used a damp ramp and wiped it all down. Then I used a small amount of oil and rubbed it around just inside the flapper. Seems to work. Now I don't have to stand at the gas pump and continuously pull the lever like an animal.

WD-40 ends up drying up parts. You need to use silicone pray- which is great for rubber & plastic. (FYI) Thanks for the video.

I didn’t realize that the actual door had a seal for the system!! My light was always going on or off after fueling. My door seal was just dirty. I cleaned everything and put a light silicone grease on the actual door seal.

My 2011 Mustang Shelby GT500 check engine light came on and when I used an OBD2 code reader is had a diag. code 0456. I cleaned the capless filler area, , used WD40 around the filler hole/flap and then used the nozzle from the gas pump to go in/out several times. Cleared the code and haven't had it come back so assume the problem was the filler flap not closing properly due to dirt/grime.

WD 40 is a good idea, I would also use a rag soaked in diesel, it makes a good lubricant, same with brake fluid, I use brake fluid to remove rusty bolts and nuts, it works great.

Armour all is crap!!!! I would use anything but armour all to clean.

This may be the cause of my P0456 code that just occurred. Small leak. The parts store said it’s probably the gas cap.

They are absolutely terrible. after a recent rain I opened the fuel door and observed water pooled on top of the trap door. I had to blot it out with a dry paper towel trying not to push against the trap door. There is no telling how much water has penetrated the trap door.

got code p0446 - 2019 f150 with just 18 k miles on it. will attempt this method - and see what happens.. Was life simpler - when we just had a 1966 f150 - with none of these great fail safes - and warning lights - i'm starting to think so.

this is for lazy people that cant take the few seconds to remove a fuel cap and then when there done fueling put it back on I would rather do that . as time goes on the seal will leak the vapors and you have have a evap leak code causing your eng light to come on clean or not it will still happen
