No Country For Men Who Don't Give Sensible Answers

The gentleman who portrays the border agent performs an acting miracle in this scene: In just over a minute, he makes you recognize and believe who he is, with no reservations about what that means. His nonverbal response to being told he's wearing an overcoat is the stuff of transcendent acting--bravo!

I wonder what a conversation between Chigurh and this agent would have been like

"What outfit?"
"I was a combat correspondent. Journalist."
"Get the hell out of here."

The actor playing the INS agent in this scene is Brandon Smith. Sadly, he passed away in October 2023. RIP. That scene was memorable due to his outstanding performance.

Only a veteran can answer that quickly about his tours of duty, dates when a he served and what unit he served with. No false valor here.

“Yes sir, Nam.”
“What outfit?”

I always felt like this guy was on a power trip, but upon review, I realized he's just doing his job well.

He is still more capable than the vast majority of TSA agents.

Anton didn’t go after Llewelyn in Mexico because even Anton wouldn’t dare jack with this guy.

I think you sort of have to contrast this scene to the one in the hospital where Llewyn is talking to Carson Wells. When Wells mentions he's a Vietnam vet, Llewyn sarcastically asks "is that supposed to make us buddies or something?" Yet here, it's that shared experience of serving in Vietnam that allows him safe passage. Not sure what to make of it.

One thing I really like about this movie is that there are "little movies" within which are tangential at best to the plot, but add just as much relevant mood as the parts which are central.

His 68' deployment was during the tet offensive which had some of the heaviest and most brutal fighting throughout the war. Border gaurd def picked up on this it's why he immediatly earned his respect.

No Country For Old Men & Once Upon A Time In Hollywood are two movies where literally every actor brought the absolute best performance they possibly could to their role even if they’re only on screen for a minute or less. This guy, the trailer park clerk & the gas station clerk were just absolutely amazing every second they were on screen. I love being able to really remember characters that are barely in a film whether it’s simply the actor, writing, directing or a combination of the three.

Something I picked up from this scene.
The public hated the Vietnam vets. But man did those vets look out for each other.
Soon as that man knew Llewellyn served legit. He let him pass. Even told his colleague to help him.

Really cool. As soon as he believed him about his tours, not only did he let him in, he got his underling to give him a ride.

0:31 that face. He's been jacked with before. And he swore a blood oath to God that it would never happen again.
