A one-to-one function is a function where for each x-value there is only one y-value and vice versa. The graph of a one-to-one function can be crossed only once by any vertical or horizontal line. A function that is not one-to-one is many-to-one. A function will have an inverse that is also a function if and only if it is a one-to-one function. The maximal domain of a function is the largest domain for which its rule is defined. If a function is given without a specified domain, it is understood that the maximal or implied domain is intended.
