One time i wandered around the stronghold for half an hour just to realize it was divided in two

Once i was speedrunning with friends. The portal had spawned inside of a ravine and we searched every inch of the stronghold. We lost hopes of finding and just changed to spectator mode, turns out the portal was at the other side of the ravine, without any connections, and was inside the stone. So this is not "every time"

In Java the stronghold was blocked off by the ocean monument and in the 2nd stronghold the ocean ruins were in the portal room

If you don't want to deal with the maze and blow it up you should set off one tnt at a time so any loot you might want to keep doesn't get exploded.

On one world the stronghold spawned half in water (no surrounding block, just there in the water) and you could actually swim into the portal room.

Its never within 5 Blocks of the starter staircase and the average rooms from the starter staircase are 6 but it has no limit, it can also generate 15 rooms away
