Chief took off his Combat helmet to let his Tactical helmet get some fresh air at the end of Halo CE.

I think my favourite thing I heard about this was from my dad. Played Halo 1 and 2 all the time. And he always told me you didn’t see his face because “you” are the master chief. Hearing this as a kid was awesome. Sparked my imagination like nothing else. Pretending to be a bad ass Spartan was definitely a blast. Now I look back and simply enjoy the many memories.

I think his face being a mystery is nice. It helps the player place themselves in Chiefs' boots and I think that's one of the things that makes Halo so great.
