I tore my tricep off the bone- after surgery- I could NOT lift a 1lb weight over my head! After 2 1/2 years I can lift a 25 lb dumbbell over my head and I'm still getting stronger!

Close grips, dips and pushdowns heavy and to failure have blown my triceps up bigtime!

Triceps were always the one body part I couldn't effectively train with free weights due to zero mind-muscle connection, combined with inflexible shoulders. I never felt like I could engage my triceps effectively without cables.

Overhead tricep extensions with a good stretch is money in the bank👍

I am a big fan of the VBAR for tricep work.I use them on pushdowns and use the rope at a light weight just to warm up my elbows, two sets. Then move to VBAR to go heavy.I also use the VBAR for tricep overhead extensions because I can load up the weight and keep decent form.Just be mindful of your wrist postion for overhead extensions.Good vid and info!!

I’ve brought my puny arms from 15 inches back in 2020 to 17 inches in 2024. Excellent, no BS advice! 💪💪💪💪🏋️‍♀️🏋️‍♀️🏋️‍♀️

Peter, I just swapped out the ropes w the v-bar and performed a couple sets. Great feel and pump. Thanx for the reminder!

I always found the exact same you are talking about here when it comes to the push down. I always loved the tricep push down but around 02 time I just started going heavier and heavier and just working with whatever movement allowed me to do such whilst feeling the best pump on my triceps.

I did the exact same, I started treating it almost as a compound movement using a v bar and 'pushing' down with the weight, looked alot like ego lifting but it was that which for the first time ever actually put serious mass on my triceps. It was on an old school cable machine I used to have to put a 22kg dumbell and a 10kg on top of the stack and a few times the cable would need replacing over those years lol.
I noticed also some years later watching blood and guts on youtube and dorian wearing a weighted belt to do push downs and understanding exactly why,
These days I dont go AS heavy but the principle still applies, ie im treating it as an almost compound excersie and im leaning right into it and treating it as a pressing movement.
Ive always had meaty triceps with a defined horseshoe since I did the excercise this way

As always excellent advice, and here I've been on a similar train of thought after years of failures of tips that were given to me to no major growth

I have a hard time going back to dual rope pressdowns after spending a lot of time doing pressdowns with a V-bar. You've got extra stability and what feels like the perfect wrist position. Straight bar usually bothers my wrists when it gets heavier. I've also found leaning forward, keeping the cable close to my chest (kinda diagonal) and pinning my elbows in place really helps me feel the movement in my triceps. It's less of a press and more of an extension. You can get a pretty good stretch if you play around with your elbow position.

My other go-to has been overhead cable extensions, also with a vbar. I feel like my elbows tolerate them better with a little more 'press' than pure extension. I like having a consistent touch point (back of the neck / traps) which allows me to keep getting a consistent stretch. Another lift I keep in my rotation is a smith-machine JM press with a false grip. That's a brutal exercise, with a very unique triceps stretch (deep by the elbow). Currently taking a break from it as it aggravates my shoulder. I can't wait to put it back in as that lift feels like you have so much progression potential... and specifically progression that is tied directly to triceps size.

I'm running PPL with triceps on my pull days, which is really nice. Some angles might be slightly fatigued from the pressing work the day before, but for the most part... I can hit tris reallly hard and then they get some nice recovery due to the leg day.

Videos like this is why Peter Khatcherian is one of my favorite influencers. Plain, simple, no nonsense information, without all the bs.

I’ve noticed the same two points in my training. Substituting specialty over-isolating exercises with basic, easily loadable exercises has transformed my training. Great tips!
